This week…

In English, we continued with our unit on non-fiction text. We published our local area guides. Then we began to look at explanation texts; we explored the features and created checklists for success. We then began to consider the purpose of explanation texts and the audience. We discussed how the audience will influence language choice and began to research ideas on a topic.

In Maths, we continued our unit on Fractions. We learnt about mixed numbers, improper fractions and how to convert mixed numbers into improper fractions.

In science, we researched the scientific fields; electricity and Newton’s laws of motion. We continued to explore electric circuits and to understand the role of the switch. There is more to come next week as we build balloon-powered cars and light – up cards!

Spetses week ending 07.03.25

In English, we wrote different sections for a local area guide to encourage people to move to Thornton Heath or Croydon. Over the week, we looked at different writing components, to create a persuasive piece; positive verbs and emotive vocabulary, imperative verbs and phrases and catchy slogans.

In Maths, we continued the unit on Fractions; placing fractions on a number line, comparing  & ordering non-unit fractions and understanding equivalent fractions.

In Science, we started the current unit ‘Electricity and circuits’, with a trip to the Science museum. We watched a demonstration on wireless electricity and explored circuits and much more. In class, we learnt more details on mains and battery charged appliances and investigated simple circuits.

In RE, we deepened their understanding of Orthodox Lent; they learnt about the 40 days preparation for Pascha and enjoyed flying kites for Clean Monday celebrations.

Welcome back after half term!

In English, we began our new unit on non-fiction text. The first week started with a focus on the features of holiday brochures. We moved to research and making notes about the local area. The children began to look closely at persuasive writing, how adjectives can be used to write enticing descriptions.

In Maths, the children began a new unit on fractions; understand denominators, compare & order unit fractions, understand numerators, understand the whole and placing fractions on a number line.

In Geography, we started our new unit ‘Settlements’ with map work; locating our local area and beginning to use the OS legend to identify land use for the local area.

Spetses week ending 14.02.25

We finished, this half term, with an investigative and creative week; completing our Big Write short adventure stories, investigating weather in computing, creating body percussion pieces in music and designing book covers for our reading records.

In maths, year 3 continued the unit on length and perimeter; adding, subtracting lengths and learning about perimeter; identifying, measuring and calculating perimeter. Year 4, focused on measure in kilometres and metres, equivalent lengths (kilometres and metres), perimeter on a grid and perimeter of a rectangle.

Spetses week ending 07.02.25

In English, the children focused on writing a short adventure extract. The children considered various features to aid their writing, such as describing their setting using expanded noun phrases, using the rule of 3, including fronted adverbials, dialogue and synonyms for said.

In Maths, Year 3 focused on units of measure; measuring in metres, centimetres and millimetres, understanding their relationship, converting units of measure and comparing measures. Next week, year 3 will continue this unit with addition and subtraction measures and perimeter. In year4, continued to develop their understanding of division by extending from dividing 2-digit numbers to dividing 3-digit numbers. The children consolidated their understanding of correspondence problems, using multiplication to work out the number of possible combinations of sets of items. Furthermore, the children used their knowledge and understanding of multiplication to begin to make decisions regarding the most efficient or appropriate methods to use in a range of contexts.

In Science, the children focused on evaporation; investigating rates of evaporation in different conditions. They also learnt about the stages of the water cycle and how important this is to the environment. They finished the unit by looking into the climate change impacts on the water cycle.

Spetses week ending 31.01.25

This week…

In English, the children focused on the recent writing techniques through ‘slow writing’. This allowed the children the opportunity to focus on how to use the techniques to write engaging paragraphs. The children really enjoyed the creative writing sessions this week – there was some great pieces!

In Maths, year 4 continued exploring related facts for multiplication and division and using informal written methods for multiplication. Year 3 focused on the last few steps in the multiplication and division unit; dividing 2-digit numbers by a 1-digit number – flexible partitioning, dividing a 2-digit number by a 1-digit number – with remainders, scaling and how many ways to solve words problems. We ended the week with the start of the new unit, measures.

In Science, the children identified liquids and gases using their properties, used the results to draw simple conclusions about the properties of liquids and gases. They also described melting and freezing processes using scientific vocabulary.

Spetses Week ending 24.01.25

This week…

In English, the children focused on using the ‘Rule of 3’ to write a setting description. They considered using an appositive to describe a character and were able to write the beginning and build-up of the story. Furthermore, the children were able to add tension and detail to their story.

In Maths …

Year 4, the children learnt about dividing by 10 and 100. They were able to notice the link between dividing by 10 and dividing by 100 and visualised making a number one-hundredth the size and recognised that “one-hundredth the size” is the same as “dividing by 100”. Furthermore, the children explored related facts for multiplication and division and used informal written methods for multiplication.

Year 3, the children continued the multiplication unit; Multiplying a 2-digit number by a 1-digit number – with exchange, linking multiplication and division, dividing a 2-digit number by a 1-digit number – no exchange and we begun to explore using flexible partitioning

In Geography, the children conducted some fieldwork research in our local woodland. They used a tally chart and a questionnaire to find out how the woodlands was used. They will use this information to create a presentation and to present their findings.

Spetses week ending 17.01.25

This week…

In English, we explored the impact of words on the reader through descriptive writing. We worked in small groups to generate ideas to describe the Amazon rainforest using all our senses. We also used various comprehension skills to understand more about the Amazon rainforest. We ended the week with some work around personification in a similar style to Katherine Rundell, the author of the class text.

In Maths …

Year 4, started a new unit on multiplication and division; they looked into identifying factor pairs, using factor pairs, multiplying by 10 and multiplying by 100.

Year 3, continued the unit on multiplication and division; making connections in multiplication, problem solving and multiplying 2-digit numbers by 1-digit numbers without exchange.

In Geography, the children learnt about the lives of indigenous peoples living in the Amazon rainforest, why tropical rainforests are important and the threats to the Amazon. They used the knowledge to create fact files and to write a letter to the President of Brazil about preserving the rainforest.

Spetses week ending 10.01.25

In English, we focused on using powerful phrases, developing prediction skills and understanding the impact of word choice. The children were able to describe a setting using powerful adjectives, expanded noun phrases and their five senses. Furthermore, the children made predictions about character’s actions and expressed an opinion on word choice through suggesting alternative words to change the impact on the reader.

In Maths

Year 4 learnt that area is the amount of space taken up by a two-dimensional shape or surface. They explore different ways of working out the area of a shape, made rectilinear shapes using a given number of squares and work systematically to find and compare the areas of all the different rectilinear shapes.

Year 3, deepened their understanding on multiplication and division; making links between different times tables and to use these knowledge to multiply tens by 4/ 3/8.

In Geography, the children have been learning about the Amazon rainforest. The children considered and identified the location using an atlas and features of the Amazon rainforest and were able to describe and give examples of a biome. Furthermore, the children named and described the characteristics of the four layers of a tropical rainforest.
