Year 2 Week Ending 10.3.17
Welcome to Year 2!
This week in Year 2
In our Literacy lessons we have been continuing our learning about explanation texts. We have been researching information on butterflies and have used this to create an explanation text on the life cycle of a butterfly. We included headings, conjunctions, comparative words, technical vocabulary and pictures.
In Numeracy we have been learning how to round numbers to the nearest 10. We learnt that if there is a 1, 2, 3 or 4 in the ones (units) column we need to round down to the nearest 10. If there is a 5, 6, 7, 8 or 9 in the ones column we need to round up to the next 10.
We have also been learning how to use the greater than > and less than < symbols to compare numbers.
In R.E. this week, we looked at the church and why it is a special place. We also thought about what we do when we go to church including lighting candles, kissing the icon and making the sign of the cross.
We have continued our learning on our new topic this week which is called ‘Why would a dinosaur not make a good pet?’ and has a science focus. We explored the different habitats found in the world including rainforest, polar regions, desert and forests, describing what these places are like. We also looked at the different animals that live in these habitats and discussed how they have adapted to live there.

Weekend Writing Challenge
In literacy this week we have been writing our own ‘Explanation Texts’ on the life cycle of a butterfly. We have learnt that Explanation Texts explain to us how a process works. For your writing challenge this week I would like you to create an Explanation Text on the life cycle of a frog. You need to include in your writing:-
- Pictures/diagrams of each step of the cycle
- Ordered paragraphs/sections
- Joining words (because, this means, so etc)
- Comparative words (brighter, smaller, stronger etc)
- Technical vocabulary (tadpole, spawn etc)
- Full stops and capital letters in the correct places.
I would like you to present your learning in a creative way and write at least a page for your explanation text. I look forward to reading them!
