Year 2 Week Ending 13.1.17

This week in Year 2
In our Literacy lessons we have been learning about Traditional Tales. For this we have been exploring the story of ‘Cinderella’. We have understood what types of characters they are, creating questions and dialogue between them. We have also compared the story of Cinderella to ‘The True Story of Cinderella’ and ‘Seriously Cinderella is so annoying.’
In Numeracy we have been focusing on partitioning 2 digit numbers into tens and ones and the different ways in which we can do this.
We have also been learning about length. We have learnt how to measure the length of different objects accurately using a ruler making sure we start measuring from the 0. We have also compared the lengths of different objects using = (equals), < (less than) and > (more than).
In R.E. this week, we celebrated the feast days of Saint Basil (1st January) and Theophania (6th January).
We have started our new topic ‘What was London like in 1666?’ which has a history focus. We have looked at where the Great Fire of London took place as well as the events of it.

Weekend Writing Challenge
This week in literacy we have been introduced to a new topic: Traditional Tales. We have focused on the story of Cinderella and have described the characters using good and bad characteristics. For your writing challenge I would like you to write a character profile of the Prince using suitable characteristics that describe him. You need to include in your writing:-
- Adjectives to describe his good/bad characteristics (mean, kind, caring etc.)
- Examples from the story to support your descriptions
- Some sentences with conjunctions (and, because etc. – e.g. The Prince is generous because he invited everyone to his royal ball).
- Full stops and capital letters.
I would like you to be as creative as possible and write at least a page for your description. I look forward to reading them!
Reminders
Book Bags: Please ensure that the children bring their book bag to school every day, as in addition to being a means of transporting reading materials it is a valuable method of communication. We encourage the children to give important notes from their parents direct to their class teacher.
Uniform: Please ensure that all items of clothing are clearly labelled with your child’s name. Children will need their P.E. kits in school on a Wednesday as this is our PE day. Please encourage children to be independent dressers at home, as these skills will be helpful at school.
Reading: We change the children’s reading books daily, so if they have finished their books please ensure that the children put their home reading record and reading book in the basket every morning to be changed. Please support your child with reading at home and record a comment in their reading record.
Phonics: The phonics scheme we follow is Read, Write Inc. Please read and practise your sounds and spellings with your child at home.
Spellings: This week’s spellings are – pencil, nostril, fossil, April, until, council
