Welcome back to Cyprus and Ithaca class,

We have finally reached the end of the academic year for year 4!!! And what a year it has been 🙂 This week we have really enjoyed celebrating the end of year with our annual class parties. 

Some of the highlights of this year has been:

  • Sports Day
  • Residential visit to Hooke Court
  • The Shared City Project
  • The British Museum
  • Zoo Lab and many more!!!!

We have had a fantastic year with yourselves and all the children in both Cyprus and Ithaca class.

We would like to thank all the parents for your support over the course of this year and would like to wish you all a wonderful, safe and happy summer holiday!!! We would also like to wish all the children the best of luck as they progress into Year 5.

Welcome back to Cyprus and Ithaca class,

We hope you have had a great weekend.    

In Literacy we will be learning about features of writing a recount. Children will focus their recount on the World Cup and will learn how to report about a current event. They will focus on vocabulary and language as well as structuring and ordering a recount.

In Numeracy we will be learning about finding and describing patterns or relationships between shapes and numbers. We will be focusing on symmetrical patterns and number sequences using magic number squares. We will also be learning about Compass Directions and using grids to describe direction using co-ordinates.

In topic this week we will be learning about famous people both past and present from Russia such as:

  • Catherine the Great
  • Cossacks
  • Lenin
  • Yuri Gagarin
  • Peter the Great
  • Stalin and the role of Russia in World War II
  • Valentina Tereshkova

Your home learning challenge this week is to choose your favourite fairy tale such as Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, Goldilocks and the Three Bears etc and re-write the story from another characters point of view.

For example Cinderella could be re-written from the point of view of the ugly sisters or Goldilocks could retell the story about the three bears or you could even re-write the story of the Three Little Pigs from the Big Bad Wolf’s point of view. Be as creative and as imaginative as you can; you could even have a twist in the story and create your own version of these fairy tales!

Welcome back to Cyprus and Ithaca class,

In Literacy we will be continuing our learning on historical narratives and stories. This week we will be editing our stories and focusing on vocabulary using story language to finalise our draft stories based in Ancient Greece. We will also present our stories to the class and focus on using intonation and expression within reading when presenting aloud to an audience.  

In Numeracy we will be learning about describing movements between positions as translations using co-ordinates and shapes. We will also be focusing on solving measuring problems and conversions mentally.

In topic this week we will be learning about: Who were the Greek Gods and Goddesses?  

Your home learning challenge this week is to think about the future and if you were famous what would you be famous for and why. What would you do? You then need to choose either one of the following below and write either: 

  • An account of what you would like to be famous for and why?
  • A diary entry as if you are already famous explaining how you are feeling, what you are famous for and why. What do you have to do?

Cyprus and Ithaca Blog: Week Beginning:  4.6.18  

Welcome back to Cyprus and Ithaca class,

We hope you have had a lovely half term break.  

In Literacy we will be learning about the features of writing historical narrative. We will be focusing on several historical stories from Ancient Greece and will compare the similarities and differences between them. We will learn how to write notes and create a plan for our own stories as well as focusing on writing openings for stories using a range of conjunctions, adverbs and prepositions to show the passing of time and place.

In Numeracy we will be learning about reading and describing positions on a 2D grid using Co-Ordinates. We will also be focusing on solving addition and subtraction problems with 2-step methods.

In topic this week we will be learning about: Who were the Ancient Greeks and when and where did they exist.

We are also very much looking forward to our Year 4 trip to the British Museum to explore and conduct some research about the Ancient Greeks. We are also excited about seeing some original pieces of artefacts from this era and become real historians for the day.  

Your home learning challenge this week is to create your own Greek God or Goddess and make a leaflet about them. To find some inspiration, research about Greek Gods and Goddesses to give you some ideas. We would like you to be as creative and as imaginative as can be. However these are some suggestions you could include:

  • What is their name and what does their name mean?
  • How old are they?
  • Who are their relatives? (Are they related to any other Greek Gods or Goddesses?)
  • Where do they live?
  • What are they the God or Goddess of?
  • What are their special powers?
  • Interesting facts about them?

Welcome back to Cyprus and Ithaca class,  

This week we have been celebrating Arts Week. We have been focusing on animals and insects as our theme. During this week we have:

  • Written diaries and stories
  • Investigated about animals and insects
  • Created a dance routine linked to the behaviour of animals and insects
  • Investigated food chains
  • Designed a Board Game involving the 4 number operations with a theme of animals and insects
  • Number Games Carousel
  • Celebrated the Pentecost
  • Created and decorated part of a honeycomb to represent the significance of the Bee in the Greek Orthodox religion

Our topic for next term will be History: Who Were the Ancient Greeks?

Your home learning for over the holidays is to research and create a poster about the Ancient Greeks. You can choose an area of interest for example:

  • Olympics
  • Greek Gods or Goddesses
  • The Parthenon
  • Life in Ancient Greece

 You also need to make an Ancient Greek object from recyclable materials such as:

  • Greek Vase
