Welcome to Year 5

Week beginning 21.9.20

18.09

Year 5 11.9.20

Wow! What a wonderful week we have had with our children.

Thank you parents for being so patient and understanding with all of the changes that have been happening. We are so pleased to have the children back and settled into school.

Please remember to bring in PE kits!

Next week in English, we will be learning about stories written by the same author. This topic will be running across a number of weeks and we will be looking at the author Michael Morpurgo.
In maths, we will be covering objectives, that the children missed out on in year 4, in our big maths sessions. In our main maths sessions, we will be learning how to count on in 100s, 1000s and 10 000s. We will also be focusing on rounding and negative numbers.

In history we are learning about the Anglo-Saxons, the children are really enjoying it so far! In science we are learning about forces. We would like to do a science experiment with the children next week, however due to regulations on sharing equipment this could be tricky. It would really help us, if you could bring in a large empty plastic bottle. This way your child will be able to carry out the experiment themselves, without having to share equipment. The bottles will then be put into recycling at the end of the day.

A spelling challenge will be given each week on a Thursday. This week’s spellings are:

  1. vicious
  2. gracious
  3. spacious
  4. malicious
  5. precious
  6. conscious
  7. delicious
  8. suspicious
  9. atrocious
  10. ferocious

A good tip, when practising spellings, is to put them into a sentence, so that your child understands the definition of the word. This will improve their vocabulary in their writing, producing a very able writer!

Have a lovely weekend!

A message to Skopelos 2019-2020

Message to Samos from Ms Hayward

Hi everyone,

As I said in my previous message I would like you all to read as much as possible over the summer.

I have set a selection of books that I would like you to try to read on getepic.com. Some of them you can listen to and some need to be read. I would like you to try to read / listen to at least 2 of the books that I have assigned to you. You can also read any other books like like on the site.

Go to  https://www.getepic.com/students or download the app on android or IoS. Click on Student and enter your student log in code which is jsv0472 for Tinos.  Do not sign up – this will ask you to pay. You must log in as a student to access for free.  This is the desktop link

https://www.getepic.com/sign-in

The website normally only allows access during school hours so if you do have an issue logging in this may be the reason.

Have a fantastic summer,

Ms Hayward

500 Words: Black Lives Matter Competition

Hi everyone,

As you all probably know, there has been a lot of coverage in the news around the Black Lives Matter movement. We have come across an exciting opportunity to get involved through ‘500 Words: Black lives Matter’.

Your words have the power to change you and the world around you. People can make a change based on their actions – you’ll already have encountered examples of this.

We want you to use your imagination and draw on your own thoughts and experiences when it comes to Black Lives Matter and some of the changes we are seeing in 2020. Then, write a creative short story in no more than 500 words.

Simply go to https://500words.me/ to find out more and how to enter.

This exciting opportunity is only availble until tomorrow evening unfortunately, so you haven’t got a lot of time to get your stories written but we know you can do it!

Happy writing!

Week Beginning 29th June 2020

Good Morning Year 5!

We hope that you have had a wonderful week and enjoyed the sun !

This week you’ll be completing a writing task on Purple Mash. Follow this link to watch the video ‘Francis’ https://www.literacyshed.com/the-ghostly-shed.html

You will need to watch the video and describe the ‘boat scene’ using fronted adverbials, lots of description and imagery and show don’t tell  e.g. rather than saying she was scared, you could say ‘she felt herself breathing heavily as her heart was jumping out of her chest’.

On Mathletics, you have some multiplication and division tasks to complete
