Zakynthos Class Home Learning – Week Ending 03.07.26

Dear Parents, Carers,

This week in English, the children continued with our unit ‘Poetry’ and focused on learning about Kenning  Poems. They had to create a mind map of ideas for their own kenning poem, then they drafted their poem, edited it changing words that were more suitable and then finally, published their amazing Kenning Poem and performed it in front of the class.

In Maths, we started a new unit called ‘Statistics’. The children learnt to read and interpret information presented in pictograms, building on their learning from Year 2. They constructed their own pictograms using given data on a range of topics and learnt to interpret bar charts, making links to their knowledge of pictograms.

In RE, we took a look the the Feast Day of St Paul and St Peter which takes place on the 29th June each year. The children learnt about the significance of these two Saints and how St Peter and St Paul are important to Christians and Greek Orthodox Christians because they helped share Jesus’ teachings and built the early Church. The Saints are examples of faith, courage, and service to God.

In Design and Technology, out topic is ‘Textile’ and the children will be learning how to use cross-stitch and appliqué when designing and making a cushion.  They had the experience of learning how to sew, decorate and repair a piece of fabric with style. They learnt how to do a cross stitch and an appliqué, and the word appliqué actually means applied, it’s like adding a beautiful patch. They persevered when trying to thread the needle and enjoyed trying different types of stitches.

In PSHE, we completed the unit with ‘Can anyone be anything?’ We talked and discussed about how every person can excel in any job, regardless of their gender and that a person’s gender does not matter when choosing a job. Also, to understand that all jobs can be performed by any gender and that it’s people’s abilities and talents that determines what they can do, not their gender.
