St Cyprians Greek Orthodox Primary Academy – Art and Design Curriculum Intent
Intent
At St. Cyprian’s Greek Orthodox Primary Academy, we are dedicated to nurturing a love of Art and Design within a diverse school community. We value Art and Design as an important part of the children’s entitlement to a broad and balanced curriculum. Our aim is to inspire pupils and develop their confidence to experiment and invent their own works of art. We give pupils every opportunity to develop their ability, nurture their talent and interests, whilst learning about art and artists, architects and designers in history across cultures.
Implementation
Structured Curriculum: We have a structured curriculum for Art and Design ensuring progression in all areas. Our bespoke Art and Design curriculum has five strands which run through EYFS to Year 6. Pupils generate ideas, use sketchbooks, learn formal elements of making skills e.g. line, shape, tone, texture, pattern and colour and develop their knowledge of artists and evaluate and analyse their work.
Throughout the year key skills are revisited with appropriate challenge, thus allowing pupils to revise and build on their previous learning. Our Art and Design curriculum organised into four areas:
- Drawing using a range of materials for example pencil and charcoal
- Painting and mixed-media
- Sculpture and 3D using a range of materials for example clay
- Craft and design.
Art lessons at St. Cyprian’s are always practical in nature and encourage experimental and exploratory learning with pupils using sketchbooks to record their ideas using key facts and vocabulary.
Our Art and Design curriculum has a positive impact on pupils’ learning and emotional wellbeing.
