International Greek Language Day 9.2.25

February 20, 2025

INTERNATIONAL  GREEK LANGUAGE DAY- 9th of February

On the 10th of February 2025, we proudly celebrated International Greek Language Day, a day dedicated to honouring the richness, history, and cultural significance of the Greek language. The event aimed to deepen pupils’ appreciation for the language that has shaped literature, science, philosophy, and the Orthodox Christian faith for thousands of years.

The celebration featured a variety of activities prepared by the pupils, highlighting both the beauty and historical depth of the Greek language. Pupils across various year groups recited ancient and modern Greek poems, shared traditional proverbs, and presented short theatrical plays that demonstrated the evolution of the language from antiquity to the present.

The celebration was graced by the presence of distinguished guests, including a delegation from the Greek Embassy in the United Kingdom, led by Mr. Christos Goulas, Greek Consul, as well as the Trustees of St Nicholas Preparatory School in Ghana, who were warmly welcomed by staff and pupils alike.

International Greek Language Day at St. Cyprian’s Greek Orthodox Primary Academy was not only a joyful celebration, but also an inspiring reminder of the enduring legacy and importance of the Greek language in our world today.

CELEBRATION FOR ‘’OHI’’ DAY

On the occasion  of  the 28th of October, known in Greece as OHI Day, St. Cyprian’s Greek Orthodox Primary Academy organized a heartfelt and educational event to honour this significant national anniversary. The celebration took place on October 29th in the school’s assembly hall, where pupils, teachers, and parents gathered to commemorate the historic refusal of Greece to surrender to the Axis forces in 1940.

The event showcased the pupils’ understanding and appreciation of the day’s historical importance through a variety of performances and presentations.  This was followed by a short theatrical play performed by the Year 5 students, which dramatized the events leading up to the Greek “OHI” (meaning “No”) to Mussolini’s ultimatum.

The event was honoured by the presence of the School Trustees and His Eminence Archbishop Nikitas of Thyateira and Great Britain, who offered his blessings and expressed his pride in the pupils’ efforts to celebrate and preserve Greek heritage.

Overall, the OHI Day celebration was a moving and educational experience that deepened the pupil’s’ understanding of Greek history and culture and helped instil values of courage, unity, and patriotism.
