Zakynthos Class – Week Ending 16.05.25

This week in Zakynthos…..

In English, the children had the opportunity of being creative writers. They had the task of planning, editing and publishing their own story using instructions.

In Maths, the children started a new unit called ‘Mass and Capacity’. They looked at using scales, how to measure mass in  grams and kilograms and focused on equivalent mass using grams and kilograms.

In Science, the children looked at how sounds are heard through different mediums. They did an investigation – ‘Does sound travel better through a solid (string) or gaseous (air) medium’. They worked in groups of threes and were given cups to use as a telephone. One person had to write something on a whiteboard and show the person who would say the word or words. The other  person held the cup to their ears and had to say what they heard. We then discussed which was the better medium, gases (air) or solid (string). The children recognised that sound travels faster, better, farther through solid mediums than gases like air.

In DT, the children’s end product is to design and make an Egyptian collar. Their first task was to learn how to use the technique to sew cross-stitch and then how to applique which means ‘applied’, which is used to refer to a patch to cover a hole in a piece of material and is now used to decorate textiles. Although they found the task rather challenging, they enjoyed the experienced of  threading a needle, making a knot and using felt to cross-stitch.
