Year 2 Week Ending 2.2.18

Welcome to Year 2!

This week in Year 2

In our Literacy lessons we have been continuing to explore the story of The Lonely Beast by Chris Judge. We have created our own underwater poems using alliteration and similes. We have also interviewed the beast for a news report and then used these to create our own newspaper report. We will be reading the story over the next week but we would like to keep the ending a surprise for them as we will be predicting and doing creative writing on our predictions.

In Numeracy we have been focusing on writing division statements. We have understood that dividing means sharing equally into groups and have used this to solve different dividing calculations.

We have also been exploring the relationship between multiplication and division and have used this to solve missing number calculations.

In R.E. this week, we have celebrated the feast day of the Three Hierarchs which took place on Tuesday 30th January.

We have been continuing our learning on our topic ‘Why Would A Dinosaur Not Make A Good Pet?’ which has a science focus. We have been exploring the different theories as to how the dinosaurs became extinct including an asteroid attack, a volcanic explosion, widespread disease and climate change.

Next Week in Year 2 we will be celebrating Investigation Week

Weekend Writing Challenge

This week in literacy we have been continuing to read and explore the story of the Lonely Beast by Chris Judge.

For your writing task I would like you to predict your own ending for the story, identifying what you think will happen next and how the problem will be resolved. Please do not read the story and copy the ending from there.

You need to include in your writing:-

  • An Explanation of what is going to happen next now he has spoken to the media.
  • A clear ending where the problem is resolved well.
  • A description of the beast’s feelings throughout the story.
  • Using full stops and capital letters in the correct places
  • Using direct speech between two characters.

I would like you to write at least a page for your story and I look forward to reading them!

Your Weekend Writing Books should be back in school on Wednesdays.

Reminders

Book Bags: Please ensure that the children bring their book bag to school every day, as in addition to being a means of transporting reading materials it is a valuable method of communication. We encourage the children to give important notes from their parents direct to their class teacher.

Uniform: Please ensure that all items of clothing are clearly labelled with your child’s name. Children will need their P.E. kits in school on a Monday as this is our PE day. Please encourage children to be independent dressers at home, as these skills will be helpful at school.

Reading: We change the children’s reading books daily, so if they have finished their books please ensure that the children put their home reading record and reading book in the basket every morning to be changed. Please support your child with reading at home and record a comment in their reading record.

Phonics: The phonics scheme we follow is Read, Write Inc. Please read and practise your sounds and spellings with your child at home.

Times Tables: Please continue to practise your 2, 3, 5 and 10 times tables at home as we will be completing weekly challenges on these. They will be given in a random order so please do not just focus on the answers!

Investigation Week: As part of investigation week we are going to creating some junk modelling so if you have any cardboard boxes or plastic containers that we could use we would be extremely grateful.

Thank you for your continued support and we look forward to another fun filled week.
