Welcome to Year 6

Week ending 24.01.25

In English, we have focused on SPAG, as well as using our text ‘Holes’ to create descriptive paragraphs.

In Maths, we have started algebra. Starting with finding the missing number, moving on to solving 1 and 2 step equations and the Nth Term.

In Science, we looked at adaptations, seeing how they enable animals to survive in their given habitats.

In the coming weeks we will be starting to create a memory box in Art. In order to do this, we will need children to bring in a cardboard box. This can be an old shoebox or a delivery box. A4 size would be ideal, but whatever is possible also more than acceptable. Kalymnos needed for Wednesday. Tinos needed for Friday.

Week ending 17.01.25

In English we have continued on with our text ‘Holes’. Using it to establish our understanding of the character Stanley, as well as helping us to write P.E.E paragraphs.

In Maths we are coming to the end of ratios. We have been looking at scales, using them to enlarge shapes and draw accurately.

In Science, we looked more in-depth into variation with a focus on selective breeding. Understanding it has been happening for a long time and what qualities farmers may look for when breeding certain species.

Week ending 10.01.25

With a very cold start to the year, year 6 have hit the ground running!

In English, we have started our new text (Holes). Using the text to make predictions, infer and think from a characters perspective.

In Maths, we have  started the year with ratios, understanding the relationship between ratios, how to simplify them and how to establish an amount from a ratio.

In science, we learnt about variation within a species. Focusing on environmental and inherited variations we can identify in a variety of species.

Everyone has worked very hard this week, completing many assessments. Due to this we feel that it is a good week to have NO home learning.

In English, we started the draft of our big write. An evacuees story based off of Carrie’s war.

In Maths, we have continued with fractions, focusing this week on division of fractions, multiplication of fractions and fraction of amounts.

In Science, this week we looked at heart rate and its relationship. Conducting our own experiment and recording the results.

Week Ending 29.11.24

In English, we have started planning components of our big write. Focusing on our characters and their qualities, which will reflect characters within Carrie’s war.

In Maths, we have completed our 1st part of fractions this year. Looking at addition and subtraction of mixed numbers including when we need to break the whole.

In Science this week, we compared the heart rate of animals and their mass. We then placed the findings on a scatter graph to see the correlation.

Week Ending 22.11.24

In English, we looked at contrast in setting descriptions, creating our own. Then we moved on to developing our own character for a wartime story we will create.

In Maths, we have focused on the the addition and subtractions of fractions. Understanding how to adjust denominators and deal with mixed numbers.

In Science, we created blood! we looked at all the components involved in blood and its role then created our own (fake) version.

Year 6 Week Ending 15.11.24

We have had an extremely busy week!

It was anti-bullying week. In class, the children spoke about what we mean by respect and how we can show it in different scenarios. We then created acrostic poems and took part in Odd Socks Day.

In Maths, we continued our learning on fractions, focusing on ordering and comparing them based on the denominator.

In English, we focused on contrast in our novel ‘Carrie’s War’ and what impact this has on us the reader.

In Science, we continued our learning on the circulatory system and the heart and had a go at a heart dissection! All the children were extremely brave.

Finally, we went on our trip to the Imperial War Museum. All the children had an amazing time and learnt so many new facts about WW2 and also showed off their own knowledge.

Week Ending 8.11.24

In English this week we looked at character perspectives, writing descriptions with a specific characters voice in mind. we also looked at common themes in Carrie’s war.

In Maths, we completed our learning on the 4 operations and started looking at fractions. Our focus has been on equivalent and simplifying.

In Science, we looked at the circulatory system creating a model outside. this helps prepare us for next weeks lesson, were we will be dissecting a heart.

Week Ending 1.11.24

Year 6 have had an exciting start to Autumn 2.

We have started our new text, Carrie’s War and our learning on World War II.

In English, we have written emotive and descriptive letters in character, as well as creating our own ending for our text ‘Carrie’s war’.

In Maths, we have looked at long division, order of operations and focused our attention on mental maths, trying to solve sums in our heads as quickly as possible.

In Science, we started our new unit of Circulation and Health. The children really enjoyed our lesson on healthy habits, generating great discussion.
