Year 1 week ending 1.6.22

Dear parents,

This week, we have enjoyed learning about the Queen’s Jubilee and celebrating in our class parties. Also, we have been learning about ordering and patterns of numbers up to 20.

We have given the children two sheets of phonics words for them to practice over the half term. Please encourage them to Fred (sound out) and say each word aloud.

Year 1 week ending 27.5.22

Dear parents,

This week, was science week and the children have learning about the four seasons. The children have seen two experiments of creating a tornado and a cloud in a jar which they then wrote about. Along with, creative art of making a tree from each season in groups.

Year 1 week ending 20.5.22

Dear parents,

This week, year 1 continued to focus on tens and ones up to 20 by using diene cubes.  We also continued to develop their list writing using the suffix ‘s’ and ‘es’ to create a shopping list. The children have also be learning about the past and present by the seaside in the 1920s, 1970s and today, along with looking at similarities and differences.

Year 1 week ending 13.5.22

Dear parents,

This week, year 1 focused on counting on from 10 to 20. The children used numicon and other manipulatives to help with their learning.  Along with, watching a puppet show and researching what materials are used to make a puppet. We discussed the materials as a class and the children then drew a chosen puppet and labelled what materials they think were used to make it. In addition, we began to practice making hand puppets using paper and even managed to do a short puppet show! which the children loved and we cannot wait to create our final ones to do a puppet performance. 🙂

Year 1 week ending 6.5.22

Dear parents,

This week, year 1 focused on describing the characters from our class story: The lighthouse keeper’s lunch using adjectives. We also continued to practice ordinal numbers and knowing our left and right. Along with, having a go at writing instructions independently to know whether their instructions were clear enough when making the jam sandwich. The children understood that it is important to write clear steps to follow when writing instructions.

Dear parents,

This week, year 1 focused on ordinal numbers to 10 and using positional terms such as 1st, 2nd, 3rd to describe people in pictures. Along with, making predictions about our new topic and how a basket arrived into class with only crumbs, a feather and a picture of a man on a lighthouse! It’s a mystery were trying to solve together.

This week, year 1 focused on the process of planting and identifying parts of a plant. The children had the opportunity to plant seeds and bulbs along with going on a nature walk to find leaves and identify which trees they belong to. We also began learning about Lazarus Saturday to lead into Holy week next week.

Year 1 wk ending 25.3.22

Dear parents,

This week year 1 focused using capital letters, finger spaces and full stops when writing up the voted  fairy tale ‘little red riding hood’. The children also learnt about Neurodiversity and how our brains learn differently and for them to recognise their own strengths and challenges and to celebrate them. Along with, learning the properties of 2D shapes and recognising them within pictures.

Next week is science week and we will be getting creative. Please bring any recycled materials for your children to use, e.g. washed milk bottles, boxes etc. Thank you 🙂
