Cyprus and Ithaca Blog 30.10.17

Welcome back to Cyprus and Ithaca class,

Ithaca Class Assembly will be on: Friday 3rd November 2017 at 9am.

We hope you have all had a restful and exciting half term break!!!! This week we have been focusing on ordering and comparing fractions on a number line. We have also been learning about the different types of angles: Acute, Obtuse and Right Angles and their properties.

In Literacy we have been consolidating our learning on Newspapers and writing about setting the scene for an article. We have also learnt how to incorporate information we have gathered from conducting interviews to write a story.

The homework challenge for this week is:

  • Look at the picture in your Homework book. Your challenge this week is to pretend to be a reporter that has landed on the island. You need to write a brief description to describe the setting: Your writing must include: – Where is it set? What does it look like, smell like, feel like etc.? Who might live there and why? What did you discover when you arrived there? Be as imaginative and creative as possible!!!!

Welcome back to Cyprus and Ithaca class,

This week we have been very busy celebrating ‘Inclusion Week.’ We have participated in a variety of activities and focused on the different topics within Inclusion. We celebrated and learnt about:

  • Black History Month
  • Road Safety
  • British Values
  • Bullying and E-Safety
  • Diwali
  • Guy Fawkes

And much more!!!!!!

Homework challenges for the holiday:

After the holidays we will be learning all about the Romans as our topic in History!!!

  • Research about the Romans and make a Roman Shield out of recyclable materials.
  • Research and write about an area of interest from the Roman Times. Make notes and write a non-chronological report about your chosen area of interest.

Cyprus and Ithaca Blog: Week Beginning: 9.10.17

Welcome back to Cyprus and Ithaca class,

This week we have been very busy focusing on the 6 and 7 times tables and learning about the inverse of multiplication. We have also learnt about reading the time on an analogue and digital clock. We have practised converting hours into minutes and minutes into hours as well as using mathematical vocabulary such as a quarter past, half past, quarter to etc.

In Literacy we have been focusing on newspaper reports and how to write an article. We learnt about the features of a newspaper, how to conduct an interview and gather information.  In Topic we have learnt about different types of teeth and their function.   

The homework challenge for this week is:

  1. Cut out five photographs from a newspaper. You will need to write a caption for each of the photos (a short sentence explaining the picture.) You will then need to write at least the first two sentences of the opening of the story (from your imagination.)

Year 4 – Ithaca and Samos

This week in numeracy we have been looking at equivalent fractions, as well as comparing and ordering them. We will also be looking at drawing bar charts, and asking and answering questions on what we have found.

In literacy we have been making our stories even better by adding adverbial phrases, fronted adverbials and subordinate clauses. We are still reading the Butterfly Lion and enjoying it very much.

Year 4

Welcome back Ithaca and Cyprus!

This week we have been using different mental strategies to solve addition and subtraction calculations. We will also be looking at classifying shapes, in particular triangles.

In Literacy we have been writing our own stories that raise issues or dilemmas. We have been finding exciting words we can use, such as adverbs and adjectives.

Cyprus and Ithaca Blog: Week Beginning: 18.9.17

Welcome back to Cyprus and Ithaca class,

This week we have been very busy focusing on column method addition and subtraction. We have also been practising some mental maths and learning about Carroll Diagrams.

In Literacy we have been focusing on expressing our opinions within different forms of Narrative. We have focused on The Suit Case Kid, The Diary of a Killer Cat and The Iron Man. We learnt how to write an informal letter, a diary entry and how to write an opinion. In Topic we have learnt about Classification and Vertebrates and Invertebrates.  

The homework challenge for this week is:

  1. Write a diary entry in first person pretending to be Hogarth the Killer Cat. You must write an entry of what you plan to do over the weekend and why.

Cyprus and Ithica Week Beg: 11.9.17

Welcome back to Cyprus and Ithaca class,

This week we have been very busy focusing on the multiples of 10, 100 and 1000. We have also been learning how to round off numbers and focusing on shapes and measurements!!!!

In Literacy we have been focusing on Non-Chronological Reports and how to write them. This linked in very nicely to our Topic for the term which is animals and habitats. Children were encouraged to conduct and collect their own research through a variety of resources to compile their report. 

The homework challenge for this week is:

  1. Write a story about your adventure to a magical island.

Year 4

Welcome to Year 4!

This week we are getting to know each other and reviewing the St Cyprian’s Way.

For our learning challenge this week, we are asking the children to research their class islands. Ithaca or Cyprus. This can presented however the like. We would like these in by next Friday, the 15th.

The Year 4 team are looking forward to this academic year and working with the new pupils.

Samos – Electricity!

As our topic of electricity comes to an end, we are asking the children to either bring in cardboard boxes and plastic bottles or make their own robot out of cardboard at home!

This will be due Friday 26th May as we are going to use our knowledge of circuits to make them light up!
