In Literacy this week we will be learning about Rhyming Couplets in Poetry. We will also learn how to recite a poem and create our own poetry based on the theme of School.  

In Numeracy we will be learning about rounding decimals to the nearest whole number. We will also focus on finding the halves and doubles of decimal fractions.   

In Topic this week we will be learning about:

  • What is the difference between a Conductor and an Insulator?

Your home learning this week is to be a book critique.  You need to choose your all-time favourite book and write a review about it. You must include:

  • Book title
  • Author and Illustrator
  • Type of Genre (e.g fiction, non-fiction, fantasy, humour, scary, fairy-tale, adventure, sports, animal story, biography, historical, mystery)
  • Plot
  • Setting
  • Main Characters

Welcome back to Cyprus and Ithaca class,  

In Literacy this week we will be learning how to edit play scripts and employ ellipses and brackets. We will also learn how to incorporate stage direction into our writing. We will also focus on evaluating performances focusing on speech, expression and presentation.

In Numeracy we will be learning about reading and writing Roman Numerals to 100. We will also focus on time and learn how to convert from hours to minutes, minutes to seconds, years to months and weeks to days. We will also focus on solving time word problems using conversion methods.  

In Topic this week we will be learning about:

  • What makes an electrical circuit and will be learning how to make one.

 Your home learning this week is to research about a famous electrical scientist and make a fact file about them. (You may wish to research more than one scientist.)

Year 4 16.4.18

Welcome back Cyprus and Ithaca class!

We hope you had a restful and fun Easter break, full of chocolate and excitement. We’re ready to crack on with our learning for this last term of Year 4, and hope you are too!

This week, in Numeracy, our focus is fractions, solving word problems and finding equivalent fractions. In Literacy, we are writing our own plays based on Charlie and the Chocolate factory! Once we have focused on the features and written our own play scripts, we will be acting them out.

In Science, we are starting our new topic of Electricity and looking at different types, man-made and natural, as well as how we can be safe using it.

Your home learning challenge this week is….

Write a story based on your hero. This doesn’t have to be factual, in fact, make is as exciting as possible. Keep a clear beginning, middle and end, and don’t forget the 5ws; adverbs; adjectives and fronted adverbials. Use speech, and don’t forget to use paragraphs!

As always, please focus on the spellings and x-tables at home.

This week we will be celebrating Easter!!!!

We will be busy learning about the Easter Story and doing lots of fun Easter activities, we just can’t wait!!!! We will also do some revision in Numeracy and Literacy on units we have covered this term.

Over the holidays your homework challenge is to:

  • Make an electrical device using recyclable materials such as IPhones, radios, cameras, televisions and tablets etc

You will then need to investigate the uses of electricity and why it is so important. Once you have done this you are going to pretend that there has been a power cut for 1 day and the whole world has no electricity!!! What will you do in ‘A day without Electricity?’

  • How to soundproof homes and what materials could be used to make buildings and homes quieter.

For your home learning challenge this week you are all shop owners!!! You need to pretend that you own your own business such as a restaurant, a clothes shop a pet shop, a bakery etc (you can choose) and write about:  

  • What is the name of your shop and what do you sell?
  • Where is your shop?
  • Who comes to your shop?
  • Why did you decide to open a shop selling your products?

Be as creative as possible you might even sell pet aliens on Jupiter!!!!

Welcome back to Cyprus and Ithaca class,

We hope you have had a relaxing weekend and enjoyed the snow!!!

In Literacy, we will be learning about the features of persuasive texts with a focus on identifying and employing informal and formal language within writing.    

In Numeracy, we will be learning about dividing decimals and whole numbers by 10 and 100. We will also learn how to collect data read and understand data and convert data into a Line Graph.   

In Science this week we will be investigating:

  • How pitch and volume impacts sound and vibration

Due to school closing last week the home learning challenge has been repeated this week. This is to allow all children to investigate endangered animals and species and participate in conducting some independent research and writing.

Your Homework challenge this week is to investigate an endangered animal or species and write a persuasive letter to Wild Life Alliance explaining:

  • Why is it endangered?

  • Why do we need to protect these endangered animals/species?

Cyprus and Ithaca Blog: Week Beginning:  19.2.18

Welcome back to Cyprus and Ithaca class,

We hope you have had a fantastic half term break. This week we will be having a very busy but an exciting first week back.

In Literacy, we will be learning about Sci-Fi and fantasy texts such as Harry Potter. We will be investigating the features of  Sci-Fi and Fantasy and will learn how to write our own stories based on what we have learnt.  

In Numeracy, we will be learning about finding Non-Unit Fractions of numbers and amounts. We will revisit employing number skills and will be focusing on multiplication and division to investigate fractions. We will also be learning about converting units of measure and will learn how to convert kilograms into grams and grams into kilograms.

Our new topic for the term in Science is Sound. This week we will be investigating vibration and how does sound travel.  

Your Homework challenge this week is to write a short five day diary entry about your holiday. You need to start with ‘Dear Diary…’ and could include:

  • What did you do during your holidays
  • Your Highlights
  • Explain why these were special highlights

Cyprus and Ithaca Blog 5.2.18

Welcome back to Cyprus and Ithaca class,

This week we have been very busy using our investigating skills to explore many different areas of learning. We have conducted experiments in Science and tested changes in solids, liquids and gasses. We have researched about pollution, global warming and endangered species and explored what can we do to prevent further pollution and saving the environment. 

We have also researched how London has changed since the Great Fire of London and The Plague. We have also learnt about The Tudors and researched Tales from the Tower. We also learnt how to stay safe and discussed Internet Safety.

We have had a fantastic trip to the Tower of London and very much-enjoyed celebrating Number Day.

Our new topic in Science next term will be investigating and learning about ‘how does sound affect us?’  

Your Homework challenge over the holidays is to write a short biography about a musician/singer from the past or present such as Mozart, Beethoven, or famous singers such as Michael Jackson Stormzy or even Beyonce!

Your home learning project is to make a musical instrument out of recyclable materials and with resources found at home. Be creative and as imaginative as possible!
