Welcome to Reception

Lest we forget.

Hello everybody,

This week we compared the morning routine of the three little bears with our own ones. Children were excited to learn our connectives such as first, then, next and finally. They were able to use them in order to create their morning routine.

Additionally, we described our families, using adjectives and

we shared with friends and teachers why our family is important to us.

We used different resources in order to create a portrait of our loved ones.

Children had fun and teachers as well!

Reception children. talked about Remembrance Day,

discussing the importance of it and why the symbol of Remembrance is a poppy.

We had a two-minute silence to remember the soldiers that fought for us in the war.

We made wreath made out of poppies!!

P.S. Next week we will be sending letters for our Nativity play.

Have a lovely weekend!!!!

Goldilocks and the Three Bears!

Hello parents,

We are so happy to see everyone back after the half term and share what we did with our families and friends!!

This week, Reception children were exploring a new book… ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’. While reading this book, children had the opportunity to sequence the events of the story using the connective words first, then, next and finally. Also, they used a wide range of adjectives to describe different bears (words such as soft, furry, cuddly. brown, big, small). Then children designed their own unique bears; and using the phonological knowledge, they were able to write some sounds and words.

Moreover, during Maths, children had the opportunity to learn about repeating patterns and create their own ones using Numicons and some small, coloured animal counters. We had so much fun learning about patterns!! Repeating Pattern(Click on the link!)

‘Deeper in the Bear Cave’

What a lovely week!!

We carried on with our Bear Hunt, recapping the story and sequencing it with more detail. Children enjoyed role playing and reading the story in the book corner with their friends.

During our phonics lessons, children are improving their phonological

awareness by blending sounds into words. The sounds of the week were /n/, /g/, /p/ and / i/.

Parents could encourage children at home to practice the sounds.

For Maths, children had the opportunity to count forwards while pointing

to the Numicon Shapes and then, match them to the number line

by putting the shapes into the correct order.

On Thursday, Reception had their first experience reading a Bible.

We talked about what the Bible is, why the Bible is important to our community and what we can find it in.

Then, children draw what they could see in the Bible and managed to write some letters.

Have a lovely weekend!

Miss Panayiotou, Miss McGrath, Miss Mozo & Mrs Brown wish you a great weekend.

National Smile Day 🙂

Hi everybody,

This week we went on a bear hunt!! Did you know that bears collect food throughout Autumn to hibernate? Reception has been learning many facts about bears as well as how many different types we can find around the world.

This week, children had the chance to discuss their favourite part of ‘We’re going on a bear hunt’, sequence the story and then role play it with their friends. Children learnt about the bear features by making their own unique bear faces with ‘one wet shiny nose, two big googly eyes and two big furry ears’.

During our R.E lesson, we celebrated St. Cyprian’s name day. This day is very important for our community because our school is named after him.

Last but not least… HAPPY SMILE DAY!!!!! Reception children talked about feelings and emotions, sharing what makes them happy and excited.

Have a lovely weekend,

Good bye Owls, welcome Bears!!

Kalispera gonis (Good evening parents),

In Reception, learning about the ‘Owl Babies’, children have had the opportunity to discover what animals live in the forest and which ones are nocturnal. Reading this story, we have focused on our feelings when parents and children say goodbye in the morning. So by saying goodbye to parents, Reception say goodbye to our ‘Owl Babies’, and with open arms and running legs, we welcome ‘We’re going on a bear hunt’.

English

This week, children have been improving their writing skills by tracing some sounds on salt. Also, they  practiced sequencing the different events in the story, developing their memory spam and their fine motor skills by cutting the pictures.

In Phonics we introduced our first sounds of the year: /a/, /m/, /s/ and /d/.  Teachers encourage parents to practice and support children with their phonics at home.

Maths

In maths, children counted, ordered numbers and started working with an essential element for our Maths this year, NUMICONS!! They connected the Numicon Shapes with the ordinal number and its colour.

We celebrated Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year by making delicious Honey Biscuits and eating apples for snack. Apples and Honey are a symbol of sweetness and of the hope that the coming year will be full of good things. Here is the recipe if you want to give a go with your little ones.  Rosh Hashana PP

Best wishes,
