Welcome to Year 6
It has been another exciting week here in Year 6. On Friday we were part of a virtual workshop with the UK Parliament. In English we have continued to study A Christmas Carol and we hot seated Scrooge. In maths we have continued with our fraction learning – this week was multiplying and dividing fractions. In history we have learnt all about Victorian childhood in London and in geography we have compared maps of the local area in Victorian times and now.
Your home learning this week is on Mathletics, Spelling Shed, Purple Mash, Read Theory and your writing task is as follows:
Your task this week is to write a letter of complaint. You recently visited a theme park for your brother’s birthday and lot of things went wrong. It is up to you what went wrong and you should write a letter at least 1.5 pages long.

Welcome back to Year 6 this term! we have had an exciting week as we have started our new topic of Victorian London! Our book this term is A Christmas Carol and already this week we have been analysing evidence from Queen Victoria’s life. In maths we have been concentrating on fractions.

Half term everyone! This week has been inclusion week for year 6 and we have done lots of exciting things. We have celebrated Black History Month and learnt all about Nelson Mandela and Claudia Jones (who started the Notting Hill Parade). We have created road safety posters and talked about how to stay safe online. We have ended the week by celebrating World Food Day with our chosen country of Mexico. We made our own tacos and salsa in our cookery lesson for this and in art we made Mexican inspired St Cyprian icons. As promised, you can find a recipe of the sugar skulls here – making sugar skulls

It has been another busy week in Year 6. In English we have finished our unit on the Highwayman poem and we have written our own Wikipedia entries on highyway men. In maths we have learnt to simplify and find equivalent fractions. We have investigated how light helps us see colours in science and in history we have drawn our own Islamic art.

Your task this week is to write a newspaper report about the Highwayman (based on the poem).

In English this week we have started to do some research for our information text on Highwaymen. We hope to publish our own Wikipedia style pages for this! In maths we have started to learn about lowest common multiples and fractions. Timestables are so important with these so can everyone ensure they continue to learn them if they don’t already know them. In science we have learnt all about how rainbows are formed and in history and geography we pretended to be traders working on the Silk Road.
Home learning is a writing task on purple mash (see below) along with a grammar quiz and some times tables practice. There is another assessment to complete on mathletics. Please continue to revise the Year 5 and 6 spellings that I posted last week as well as completing the spelling quiz on purple mash. For reading, continue to complete your Read Theory quizzes.
If you are unable to complete the writing task on purple mash then you can do it in your pink book. It is below:
Your task this week is to write a story with the title ‘The Secret’.
You should spend 15 minutes planning the story and at least 45 minutes writing. Your story must be at least one and a half pages long. Your story can be about anything you want, any genre but you need to remember to keep your reader interested!

It has been a busy week again for year 6. In English we have written letters to the Prime Minister to ask for extended weekends and done some drama while working on our Highwayman playscripts. Maths has focused on multiplication and division – for anyone who still doesn’t know their times tables it is so important you learn these! We have made periscopes in science and evaluated sources of evidence in our history this week.
Home learning is a writing task on purple mash (see below) along with a grammar quiz and some times tables practice. There is another assessment to complete on mathletics. Please continue to revise the Year 5 and 6 spellings that I posted last week and continue to complete your Read Theory quizzes. There has been some excellent reading comprehension done by some students!
Please ensure you continue to read your book at home each day. We know some of you have read so many since you returned to school and we are very impressed. We would like you all to write a book review of one of those books for your home learning this week – this can be done in your pink book.

Please ensure you do at least 10 quizzes on Read Theory each week.
There is also times tables and typing practice on Purple Mash. If you still do not know all of your times tables please ensure you practise these every day as you will be unable to do Year 6 maths without them.
