The government have announced new daily phonics lessons which start on Monday 27th April. These can be found at

These lessons follow the phonics scheme Letters and Sounds which is used by some schools. Although we use the Read Write Inc scheme here at St Cyprian’s please also feel free to use this new resource.

but please note that lessons are only available for 24 hours.
Home Learning During Closure
We hope you are all well and keeping you and your family safe.
Here are few things you can do at home with the children based on the learning and topics they could be missing out on.
- Purple Mash are offering free access to their online learning platform at the moment. Please use your username and password located in the children home learning books.
- Continue mark making with the children, especially writing their name using the formation sheet we sent home.
- Watch the Easter story and reinforce the reason we will be celebrating Easter in a couple of weeks. We have been learning this in class and the children have enjoyed the introduction. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0PSgoPdKQFQ
- Read/watch the following traditional stories with the children: The 3 little pigs/The 3 Billy goats gruff/Goldilocks and the three bears/Jack and the beanstalk/The enormous turnip and Chicken Licken. Talk about the stories and the morals within them.
- Explore farm/zoo and ocean animals. Thinking about where they live, what they do and what they look like etc. animal-habitats-powerpoint

Dinosaurs – Time
This week we have been learning:
About time and things that happen over time. We read a story called ‘Dinosaur time’ which took the little boy back to the time dinosaurs lived. We explored the sand timers and looked at which ones would run out first/last. We looked at our weekly timetable and spoke about when we have music, Greek and PE. We spoke about how long it would take for our caterpillars to grow into butterflies and finally looked at the clock and what a clock is for.
In phonics this week we have been learning the sounds:
- v – down the wing, up the wing.
- w – down, up, down, up.
- y – down the horn, up the horn, under his chin.
We have also started blending sounds together to make words.
In science we have started thinking about springtime, looking at what we will see, what will happen and how things grow. We have planted some bulbs and seeds and we are going to see what happens to them if we look after them. We know that plants need water, sun and time to help them grow.
We have also started thinking about Easter and why we celebrate it. This will continue over the next few weeks.
Next week we will be:
- Thinking about food dinosaurs eat.
- Talking about size and counting using dinosaurs resources.
- Learning the last of our sounds, qu/x/nk/ng
- Learning about mothers day.
How you can help at home:
- Please practise your children’s lines at home ready for the assembly.
- Practise writing the sounds that we have been learning.
- Please support the children with the recognition of 2D shapes.

Dinosaurs – Eggs
This week we have been learning:
About eggs! We read ‘Tom and the dinosaur egg’. We have been exploring what kinds of animals come from an egg and we have been making predictions as to what might be inside the egg that has been found in our classroom!!
In phonics this week we have been learning the sounds:
- sh – shhhh says the horse to the hissing snake.
- r – down his body and curl his arm.
- j – down his body, dot for his head.
We have also started putting sounds together to make words.
In maths this week we have been thinking about size and finding the right size eggs for different sized dinosaurs. We ahve also been exploring symmetry and learning about the picture being the same on both sides. We used pictures and cut them in half to check if they were symmetrical or not. We also explored symmetry at the painting table. We also learnt about the number 20 using number blocks to help us.
In Re this week we have been celebrating Clean Monday by flying our kites, we have also learnt the story of Adam and Eve and the first family. We spoke about our families and that families are a group of people that care for each other, we then decided that we were a family and we drew a picture with everybody from our class for everyone to see.
In science this week we explored thick and thin, the best way to do this was by painting and using different size paint brushes.
Next week we will be:
- Time, through a Dinosaur story.
- Learning the sounds v, y and w and starting to blend sounds to make words.
- Counting and looking at a clock face.
- Spring
How you can help at home:
- Continue name writing using the formation given to you at parents consultations.
- Combining sets of numbers and finding a total.
- Explore spring at home and when you are outside.

Dinosaurs
This week we have been learning:
About dinosaurs. Each week we will be learning something new about dinosaurs and this week we have been learning about where dinosaurs live and how they behave. We read a story called ‘Dinosaur chase’, we learnt where the dinosaurs live, how they behave and what dinosaurs can do. We explored dinosaurs in the sand, made our own dinosaurs at the creative table and have been drawing our own dinosaur pictures.
In phonics this week we have been learning:
- e – cut through the egg and scoop around
- l – down the long leg
- h – down his body and over his back
We have also continued exploring sounds we make with our bodies and voices.
In maths this week we re-visited 2D shape and described what they look like. We have been counting how many sides/edges and points/corners they have. We also made our own 2D shapes using the peg boards.
In RE this week we have been learning about Clean Monday. We read a story which explained about lent and how we celebrate the start of lent. We made pancakes on shrove Tuesday and made our own kites for us the fly on Clean Monday, 2nd March 2020.
In science this week we read ‘The very hungry caterpillar’. We then spoke about caterpillars and what they grow into! We will be exploring this more next week.
Next week we will be:
- Learning about eggs, dinosaur and springtime.
- Exploring symmetry.
- Celebrating Clean Monday.
- Introducing springtime.
How you can help at home:
- Continue name writing and exploring the sounds that we have learnt so far.
- Playing games with numbers, talking about what happens when you take amounts away and add them.
- Practise the lines for our class assembly.

Investigations week
This week we have been:
Learning how to take care of the world, focusing on the sea and oceans. We have been exploring plastic and rubbish in the sea and what it can do for ocean life. We then decided to recycle the plastic items in our home and make models using them. We made a big boat together using all sorts of plastic materials and explored the sea in the water tray sorting rubbish from sea life.
In phonics this week we have been learning the sounds:
- u – down, under, p and down to the puddle.
- b – down the laces and around the foot.
- f – down the flower and draw the leaves.
A big focus this week was maths. We read ‘One is a snail, ten is a crab’, a counting feet book. We extended our counting learning this week with counting to 100 in 10’s! In the story a crab has 10 legs so we added different amounts of crabs together to find our how many 10’s there were. We also took part in the penny challenge, thank you so much for your kind donations our penny line of coins measures 23 meters and 12 cm long. We have also been learning about the number 18 using number blocks.
In Re this week we finished learning about how God made the world and learnt about St Valentines day. We have been busy making cards for someone that we love.
After half-term we will be:
- Learning about dinosaurs.
- Re-visiting shape, thinking about the properties of each 2D shape.
- Learning about clean Monday.
- We will be starting to practice for our class assembly, please check the slip sent home for the children’s lines and date!
How you can help at home:
- Continue name writing.
- Explore counting activities with numbers to 20.
- Practice the children’s lines for our class assembly.
- Read non-fiction books with the children explaining that it is different from a story book. Show us what you have found out by drawing/writing in your home learning books.
