Dinosaurs

This week we have been learning:

About dinosaurs! We read a book called ‘Dinosaur time’. This story is about a boy that travels back to dinosaur world to see different kinds of dinosaurs! He also took a dinosaur egg by mistake so he looked after it until it hatched. He then decided that it was better for the dinosaur to go back home so the boy sent him back home. We have been exploring timers and where dinosaurs lived.

In maths this week we have learning about the number 19.

In RE this week we have been learning about Mothers day and making mothers day cards.

In science this week we have been exploring how to make a shadow using a box and a torch.

In PE this week we recapped over different modes of transport and what we would use to travel in the sky, on the ground and in the water.

Next week we will be:

  • Learning about dinosaur eggs and what animals come from eggs.
  • Learning about the number 20.
  • Celebrating Clean Monday.
  • Learning about staying safe on the road.

People who help us – Police services

This week we have been:

Learning about what the police do and what they need to be able to do their job. We have been using non-fiction books and reading police stories. We also used the police small world and pretended to be policemen and women.

In maths this week we have been learning about the number 8 and counting using the book ‘1 is a snail and 10 is a crab’. We also learnt how to count in 10’s to 100!!

In science this week have been exploring liquids and solids! We know that runny things are liquids and hard things are solid.

In RE we have been learning about what we would see when we go to church to think about God and Jesus. We watched a video showing inside a Greek Orthodox church, there are lots of icons!

Next week we will be:

  • Learning about people who help us at the bakers, we will be reading and making Gingerbread men.
  • Learning about number 9.
  • Thinking about how we show our love in Gods house, the church.

How you can help at home:

  • Continue name and number writing.
  • Playing number games.
  • Explore liquid and solid at home.
  • Talk to the children about what you can when you go to church.

Messages home:

Please ensure that the children’s costumes are in school by Friday 4th December!

People who help us – Fire services

This week we have been:

Learning about the fire services. We have been using non-fiction books to explore what firemen and women do, we have also been reading stories, playing with the fire station and pretending to be firemen and women.

In phonics we have been exploring sounds that you can make using our bodies.

In maths we have been learning about the number 7 and exploring 2D shapes. We have been looking closer at the shapes and thinking about how many sides/corners/points they have. We have been exploring shape at the playdough and on the lightbox.

In science this week we have been exploring wet and dry.

In RE we drew pictures of our families and learnt that God loves us and our families too!

Next week we will be:

  • Learning about the police service.
  • Learning about the number 8 and counting to 10.
  • Learning about Gods house.
  • Exploring liquid and solid.

How you can help at home:

  • Please continue name writing.
  • Look at the shapes you have in your home and talk about sides/corners etc.

People who help us – At the post office

This week we have been:

Learning about the post office. We watched a video that took us through the journey of a letter, we wrote our own letters and we pretended to be postmen and postwomen.

In phonics this week we have been thinking about sounds we make with musical instruments and our bodies, we have been listening to the instructions and following directions.

In maths this week we learnt the number 6 and started learning about money coins and what the number means on them. We learnt about 1p, 2p, 5p and 10p coins.

In science this week we have been exploring heavy and light. We used Kit and Pup to demonstrate what heavy and light is and then we explored the classroom to find things that are heavy and light.

In RE this week we have been learning about Diwali. We read a story about Rama and Sita and we made our own diva lamps. We also learnt about Remembrance Day. We made a wreath, made our own poppies, watched a video about what is might have been like in wartime and we also took part in a 2 minute silence.  Least we forget.

This week we also had a great time during our PE lesson. We played a new game and used the PE horses and benches. We all listened really well and had a great time.

  • Continue reading at home, please ensure that you take care of the books that go home.

Messages home:

  • Please ensure that the children are taking care of the books that are sent home. We have had a few books that have been torn and damaged and unfortunately we have had to throw them away. We will be asking for money donations for damaged and lost books.
  • Please ensure that the children have their water bottle in school everyday as we do not have anything else they could use.

People who help us – At the shops

This week we have been:

Learning about people who help us when we go shopping. We focused on the supermarket but we did talk about other shops like the pet shop, furniture shops and toy shops. We started the week reading ‘Supermarket zoo’ and we also read ‘Mr Fox’s shop’, ‘At the supermarket’ and ‘I want a shop’. We also looked at a non-fiction book which gave us information.

In maths this week we have been learning about the number 5 and counting using 5 currant buns. We used the interactive board to buy currant buns and count how many buns were sold.

In RE this week we focused on Guy Fawkes and why we have firework and bonfire night. We spoke about how to be safe when we are around fireworks and bonfires and we made our own firework pictures by flicking paint!!

In science this week we have been exploring floating and sinking. We watched Kit and Pup demonstrate what floating and sinking is and then we had a go ourselves in the water trays.

Next week we will be:

  • Learning about people who help us at the post office.
  • Learning about remembrance day.
  • Starting to learn about money and how much a coin is worth.
  • Exploring heavy and light.

How you can help at home:

  • Continue name writing and number formation.
  • Enjoying taking a trip to the shop/supermarket with the children, let them take part in paying/packing/scanning etc (If you can!!)

Thassos nursery will be open as normal during lockdown so please continue to bring the children to school, we are doing everything we can ensure the children are safe and well while they are at school as well as maintaining a normal school life for everyone.

Inclusions week

This week we have been:

Learning about black history using a wide range of stories. We read ‘Big dream little leader’ and used the people in the story in our learning this week.  We made our pictures like Alma, wrote our own stories like Octavia, explored space like Mae, Bessie and Katherine, ran like Wilma, threw a javelin like Tessa and made models like Augusta. 

In maths we have been learning about the number 4 and making charts to show which things we like.

We have been learning about great British values, being safe when we are next to the road and when we are online. If we are next to the road we need to stop, look and listen before we cross the road. If we are using a tablet/ipad/phone and something happens that we are not sure about before we tap and click, we need to stop and think and tell someone.

We celebrated world food day this week. We decided to focus on Italy and we made Vanilla custard pots using custard, cake and fruit. We hope you enjoyed them! We also painted our own Italian flags.

After half term we will be:

  • Continuing learning about people who help us, focusing on people in shops and supermarkets.
  • Learning about the number 5 and counting using 5 currant buns.
  • Talking about Guy Fawkes and firework night.
  • Exploring floating and sinking.

How you can help at home:

  • Continue name writing.
  • Playing games with numbers to 5 and writing numbers to 5.
  • Explore autumn.

Messages home:

Just a reminder about your child’s green book and reading books. Please ensure you put them in the baskets outside when its dry and give them to Mrs Bruno if its raining if you would like us to see them or change them.

People who help us – Medical

This week we have been learning:

About people who help us to be healthy. We have been looking at doctors and nurses and thinking about what they do for us. We have also been learning about the dentist and why its important to keep your teeth clean. We have been practising brushing our teeth using the play teeth, we sang a song to help us! We hope the children enjoy using their tooth brushes at home. 

We have also been talking about things we like using the catalogues to help us.  We also passed a toy around the circle during circle time and shared things we like with the class.

In maths we have been learning about the number 3 and we have started counting to 10 using 10 in a bed to help us!

We have been exploring stop and go/start this week. We used Kit and Pup to show us what stop and go is and what it looks like. We then made a line and practised stopping and going, we also used the road signs outside to guide each other around the garden. 

In RE this week we read a story called “2 fish and 5 loaves”. Jesus was able to feed many people with very little food. We then cut our own bread and paper fish and demonstrated how to share and that food can go a long way. 

Next week will be inclusion week we will be:

  • Focusing on black history through a range of stories
  • Thinking about sounds they hear around them
  • E-safety
  • Road safety
  • Our well being
  • Thinking about different fruits they like
  • Exploring Italy through cooking

How you can help at home:

  • Practise brushing your teeth and keeping them clean.
  • Practise writing the number 3 and singing number songs.
  • Exploring stop and go inside and outside.

Messages home:

  • Please ensure that you have applied for your child to start reception in September. You will need to apply to the school and online.
  • Please use the baskets outside for your child’s reading book, homework book, proud clouds and any letters you might have as we will not be checking bags from next week.
  • Please continue to encourage the children to use please and thank you.

People who help us – In school

This week we have been:

This week we have been focusing on saying please and thank you. It’s polite to use please when they need help and thank you when something has been done for them. We sang a song to help us remember why we say it, please use this at home!

We have been learning about the people who help us at school. We looked at a non-fiction book which explained all about the jobs in a school. We then added pictures of the adults from our school. We also drew pictures of the people who help us in school. 

In phonics we have started thinking about the sounds that children hear around them inside and outside.

In maths this week we have been counting to 5 using five little ducks. We have also been learning about the number 2.

In RE this week we have been learning about how God loves us and that he is always in out hearts. We hope that you like the necklace and the children understand the reason for it. 

We have also been learning about Autumn this week. We used the autumn table to explore ways we notice autumn outside. We enjoyed making leaf prints, listening to the sounds dried leaves make and singing a song about autumn leaves.

We went to the hall for PE this week! The children had great fun being in ‘Big school’ and using the large space. We played the traffic light game and practised throwing, catching and kicking a ball.

Next week we will be:

  • Learning about people who help us that help us to stay healthy and well. We will be thinking about doctors, nurses, dentists etc.
  • Learning about the number 3.
  • How God feeds many people.
  • Exploring start and stop.
  • Learning how and why we wash our hands.

How you can help at home:

  • Have some time to listen to the world around them, inside and outside. What things can they hear?
  • Practice writing the children’s names. Other than the first letter using lowercase letters please. (This can be done in the green book)
  • Practice writing the numbers 1/2. (This can be done in the green book)
  • Explain to the children about why we say please and thank you and encourage them to say please and thank you as much as possible at home.
  • Explore autumn outside. You can bring in anything you might find outside or draw pictures in your green book.

Messages home:

Please encourage the children to say please and thank you at home it really makes a difference when you do something for the children and they say please and thank you.

We sent home a letter today explaining about how things will work for you and us, please have a read of the letter and come and see us if you have any questions.

Welcome to Thassos Nursery

We are very happy that the children have settled really well and are starting to get ready for learning.

We are all starting to get use to the routines and learning what we do when.

This week we have been:

We read ‘The Rainbow Fish’ and ‘The smartest Giant in town’. We have been talking about being kind and making new friends. We made our own Rainbow fish using collage.

We have been counting using numbered fish and sorting coloured objects. We have been making our own numbers using the connecting cubes. We have also been learning about the number 1.

We have also been exploring full and empty in the water tray.

We have started practising how to make the sign of the cross and taking part in our morning prayers. We also celebrated St Cyprians Day.

Next week we will be:

  • Learning about who helps us in school.
  • Learning about the number 2 and counting using ducks.
  • Talking about God and how he loves me.
  • Learning about Autumn.

Messages home:

  • You would have noticed that the children have started taking books home. Please share the book at home and return it when you have finished. We will then send home a new book that your child chooses. Please put the reading book inside the yellow book and place them in the basket on the table outside in the morning.
  • Please practice taking your child’s coat on and off, not only would this help us in the morning it is a great still the children should be learning.
  • It would also be great if you could play some games that help the children to recognise their names!
