People who help us – When we going shopping
This week we have been:
Learning about people who help us in the supermarket. We looked at a non-fiction book and used the pictures to help us. There are lots of people that help in the supermarket to make sure we can go and shop safely. We have been busy making shopping lists and playing in the shops inside and outside. We also read a story called ‘Supermarket Zoo’. The mum in the story went shopping for animals!!!, it was a funny story. We then looked at the shops we might see near our school. We noticed there are manly different shops around us and there do not all sell food.
In maths this week we have learning how to count and write to 6. We have also been buying and making current buns and using the song to help us.
In science this week we explored floating and sinking. We used Kit and Pup to show us what floating and sinking was and then we explored floating and sinking in the water tray, we found looks of things in our class that float and sink. Please use the link below and play along with the game.

In RE this week we have been learning about remembrance day which we will take part in on Monday 11th November. We have made a special wreath and made our own poppies for us to wear. People who help us – In school
This week we have been:
Learning about all the adults that help us in our school. We have learnt their names and found out what they do. We have been drawing pictures and writing their names! We have also been learning how to draw lines!!
In maths this week we have been learning how to count to 10, we have also been counting objects and people . We have enjoyed learning about the number 5 and practising how to write it. Please use this link to watch the video.

This week we have been celebrating Diwali. We watched a video called ‘Rama and Sita’. We know that Diwali is called the festival of lights. We made our own divas using clay and paint and our teachers gave us a candle to put inside. Please use this link to watch the video.

We have also had lots of fun exploring autumn. We have been looking at the colours of the leaves during autumn time. We noticed the different colours in our non-fiction books, we looked at leaves from outside, we learnt a song called autumn leaves and we also made our own autumn leaf pictures using stamps and paint.
We have also been focusing on saying please and thank you! We watched a video and sang a song to remind us its kind and polite to say please and thank you. Please use this link to watch the video.

Next week we will be:
- Learning about people who help us in a supermarket.
- Learning the number 6 and counting using 5 current buns.

How you can help at home:
- Practice writing your child’s name, using the correct formation – please come and speak to a member of staff if your not sure.
- Practice writing numbers to 5.
- Go on a leaf hunt and bring in them in for us to share together, we are looking for as many colours as possible.
Messages home:
- Please encourage the children to stick, draw or paint something in their green books. It really makes a big difference!
- Just a small reminder about reading books. You can bring them in as often as you like, please hand them to Mrs Bruno in the morning and we will change them for you.

Inclusions Week
This week we have been:
Exploring Black History Month by reading a story called ‘Dream Big little leader’. We learnt about many different people that did amazing things because they worked hard and did their best.
We made toys on the playdough table like Augusta Savage, we created artwork just like Alma Woodsey Thomas and we had lots of fun being Tessa Sanderson in PE! We did sprinting, javelin, shot pot, hurdles and high jump it was lots of fun.
We also read a story based on a Bob Marley song called ‘Three little birds’. We used music to help us and it was lots of fun!
This week we also learnt how to cross a road safely. We know we must stay with a grown up when we cross a road and be sensible. We know we need to STOP, THINK, LOOK and LISTEN before we cross the road.
We also learnt how to be safe when we are playing on iPads, tablets, phones and when using a laptop. We know that we need to ask first and if something pops up or happens on the screen we tell the grown up and we do not sort it out ourselves. We learnt a song to remind us.
In maths this week we learnt about the number 4. We learnt how to write it and what 4 things look like in a group. We also made a chart to show which fruits we like to most. We noticed that we all like different fruit but the one we like the most is bananas.
After half-term we will be:
- Learning about the people who help us in school.
- Learning about the number 5 and putting numbers to 10 in order.
- Learning about why we say please and thank you.
- Learning about Gods house, the church.
- Exploring Autumn.
How you can help at home:
- Please encourage the children to read as often as possible it really does make a difference to their development.
- Please encourage the children to do some home learning in their book. They can do anything they like, and they will receive a sticker when they do.
Both of these books are to be placed in the yellow and green basket in the morning and will be changed and acknowledged.
- Singing songs with numbers.
- Finding 2D shapes around the house.
- Recognising their name and start to write it.
- Explore autumn outside and show us what you have found.
Messages home:
We would like the children to start writing in lower case letters instead of capital letters, please encourage this at home and in their home learning books.

Welcome to Thassos Nursery!
This half term we have been learning:
About each other. We have been learning our friends names, how to be kind to each other, how to look after our classroom and understanding our nursery routines. We have been talking about things we like and thinking about what we look like. We read ‘The Rainbow fish’ story and learnt how to share with each other.
Our Topic is people who help us. So far we have explored people who help us at the doctors, the hospital and the dentist. We have focused on keeping our bodies clean and healthy and practiced cleaning our hands correctly and how to brush our teeth. We have enjoyed playing doctors and making the other children feel better. We have also been learning about builders and looking at all the different jobs they do. We have been building our own structures using the wooden blocks and bricks outside and have been learning about the tools and how we use them.
In phonics we have working on listening to sounds that we hear around us inside and outside. We need to use our ears to listen to sounds we can hear and then enjoyed making our own sounds using our mouths and bodies.
In maths we have been learning about the numbers 0-3 using number blocks to help us. We have also been learning how to write these numbers. We have been singing lots of nursery rhymes and number rhymes to help us count up to to 10 and back again. We had lots of fun making our own Incy Wincy spiders!
In RE this week we have learning about how much God and Jesus love us. They sent us a special gift that we could take home and keep. It reminds us that they are always in our hearts and looking after us. We also celebrated St Cyprians day. It is a very special day for us, we made special badges and received a special flower to take home. We have also made some bunting for our Pink Breakfast on Tuesday 15th October. We will be raising money for the doctors and nurses to help make people better when they are sick, you are welcome to attend from 7:30am. You will need to fill out an order form for your breakfast, please ask at the office if you need another copy.
In science we have learning about stop/start and fast/slow. Kit and Pup have been helping us understand and then we have had lots of fun exploring! We can start and stop when asked and know how to move fast and slow.
We have been learning how to use the tools needed for making models using recycled materials and how to use our painting table independently.
Next week will be inclusions week we will be:
- Exploring Black History Month and using our story throughout the week.
- Learning about the Great British Values.
- Learning how to be safe online.
- Learning how to be safe near a road.
- Learning about the importance of teamwork.

- Thank you to all of that that made an appointment to see me, it was lovely to meet you all and I really do look forward to the year ahead.

Ocean, Pirates and Mermaids
Over the next few weeks we will be:
- Reading stories linked to the ocean, pirates and mermaids. We will be reading; There was an old lady who swallowed the sea, Commotion in the ocean, Peter Pan, Pirate school, The Troll, Just Narwhal and the Little mermaid. We will also be exploring this topic in all areas of the setting.
- Reading ocean animal poems and rhymes.
- Learning the last of RWI set 1 sounds. w, th, z, ch, qu, x, nk and ng.
- We will also be learning how to write simple CVC words using our sounds.
- We will be sequencing parts of stories that we know well.
- Continuing our learning on 3D shapes, noticing that 2D shapes are flat and 3D shapes are solid.
- Re-visiting positioning, thinking about on, under, next to etc.
- Enjoying lots of messy play.
- Learning about Summer and re-capping over the seasons this year.
- We will be practising for sports day during our PE sessions.
- We will be meeting our Reception teachers and visiting our new classrooms. We will also be talking about next year. We will be asking the children things they are looking forward to and what they maybe worried about.
How you can help at home:
- Continue with name writing.
- Encourage the children to write using the sounds that we have learnt.
- Counting and shape activities.
Messages home:
- We will soon be selling activity learning packs for the children to do during the Summer. They will be priced at £3.00 each.
- As you are aware the weather changes every second, please ensure the children have a jacket in school as we use the outside area every day.
- Our trip with Apples and Honey is on Tuesday 18th June. You will need to bring the children in normal time and we will be returning to school for 11:50am depending on traffic. Please do not bring book bags to school on this day.
- Sports day is Thursday 27th June. You are invited to come and support your children.
- Our Battersea Park Zoo trip is on Friday 28th June. We will be leaving as soon as the children are registered and returning between 3:00-3:30 depending on the traffic. Please do not bring book bags to school on this day and please ensure your child’s lunch is in a plastic bag so it can be thrown away.
- The Summer fete is on Friday 28th June at 3:30pm, you are all welcome to come and enjoy the afternoon. It will be taking part in the main school hall.

Arts week/Traditional tales – Chicken Licken
This week we have been:
Reading the traditional tale ‘Chicken Licken’. We have learnt a song that helps us to remember the story and have been using the story ‘Chicken Licken’ to design our own chickens.
In phonics this week we have been learning:
- v – down the wing, up the wing.
- y – down the horn, up the horn, under his chin.
We we have also been reading stories that rhyme and thinking about words that rhyme with our names.
In maths this week we cut out different sized circles and used the outside to make shape pictures. It was tricky because it was a very windy day but we managed to make a circle, an oval, a heart and a triangle.
In RE this week we have been learning about ‘The Ascension’. We went to the hall and looked at the large ascension icon. We discussed who we could in the icon and what story it was telling us.
We have had lots of fun getting ready for our class assembly and we hope you enjoyed it!
After half term we will be:
- Learning about the ocean, starting with ocean animals.
- Learning the sounds w and th.
- Continuing our learning about our 3D shapes.

Traditional tales – The enormous turnip
This week we have been:
Reading a story called ‘The enormous turnip’. The old lady and old man loved turnips so they planted turnip seeds. One of the seeds grew so big it was tricky to get out of the ground! With lots of help and team work they managed to pull it out from the ground. We have enjoyed telling the story in the sand tray.
In phonics this week we have been learning:
- r – down his body, curl his arm.
- j – down his body, curl, dot for his head.
- We have also re-visited rhyming words in stories.
In maths this this week we have been learning about 3D shapes. We looked at the 3D shapes and noticed they were made from 2D shapes. We used shape nets to build 3D shapes, and used the large and small polydron to build our own 3D shapes.
In RE this week we celebrated ‘St Constantine and St Helen’. We used a story to help us understand who they were and why we celebrate them, we then went on a cross hunt in our classroom.
In science this week we explored forces using ‘The enormous turnip’. We used different textured boards to roll turnips and balls on, we were experimenting which surface would make the turnip and ball move quickest once it was pulled out.
Next week is arts week, we will be:
- Exploring art using the story ‘Chicken licken’.
- Focusing on dots and circles and creating pieces of art.
- Learning about the ‘The Ascension’.
How you can help at home:
- Continue name writing.
- Continue recognising numbers the children can see around them.

Traditional tales – The 3 little pigs, Goldilocks and the 3 bears and The 3 billy goats gruff
This week we have been:
Exploring traditional tales with 3 in the title. We read a story called ‘Fairy-tale news’, it was lots of fun reading different traditional stories all in one book. Jack became a paper boy so he could earn some money and he delivered newspapers to the Three bears, Little Red riding hood and to Jack and the beanstalk. We have also read the Three Billy Goats gruff and Goldilocks and the three bears and have been singing songs about different traditional stories.
In phonics this week we have been learning:
- ‘h’ – from his head to his feet, over his back.
- ‘sh’ – slither down the snake, from his head to his feet, over his back. ‘shhh says the horse to the hissing snake’.
In maths this week we have been re-visiting 2D shape. We played a game selecting the correct shape name, explored shape stencils and puzzles and had fun using the shape mats.
In Re this week we re-visited ‘Noah’s ark’. We used the boats and animals to retell the story together and painted our own rainbows. God puts rainbows in the sky to tell us that he loves us.
We have also continued planting seeds and making props and costumes for our class assembly.
Next week we will be:
- Reading ‘The enormous turnip’, exploring size and shape.
- Starting to learn about 3D shape.
- Exploring forces using ‘The enormous turnip’

Traditional tales – Jack and the beanstalk
This week we have been:
Reading the traditional tale ‘Jack and the beanstalk’. We enjoyed listening to the story and had fun re-telling the story using puppets and masks. We have also learnt a song that also tells the story. We used the story to help us learn about how things grow. We have been looking closely at our class beanstalks, planting our own seeds and bulbs, making beanstalks using cubes and explored how to plant seeds and bulbs in the water tray. We know that plants need soil, water, sun and time. We are going to help our plants grow and watch what happens to them.
In phonics this week we been learning:
- e – cut through the egg and scoop around.
- l – down the long leg.
In maths this week we have been investigating height and thinking about how tall our beanstalks and cube towers are. We have been comparing and using taller and shorter to describe them.
In RE this week we read another story from the bible, ‘Feeding many people’. Jesus made 2 fish and 5 loaves of bread feed 5000 people! We also made a small amount of bread feed the whole class and we had bread left over! We think Jesus is very special and kind and we like sharing too.
In PE this week we have started practising for our class assembly, please come and see me if you have any questions.

- Continuing traditional tales, reading stories with the 3 bears, the 3 pigs and the 3 billy goats.
- Learning the sounds h and sh.

Welcome back, we hope you had a restful break.
Traditiional Tales
This week we have been:
Reading stories about traditional story characters. We read a story called ‘A Wolf at the door’. The story included the three little pigs, three billy goats gruff, Goldilocks and the three bears, Cinderella, Little red riding hood and Little bo peep. They were all scared of the wolf although they had not seen him they could just hear him! They realised that all the wolf wanted to do was play.
In Phonics this week we have learning the sound ‘f’ – down the flower and draw the leaves.
In maths this week we had lots of fun counting! We counted claps, stamps, jumps, pats and star jumps. We counted to 10, then to 20 and then to 30!! We also started to look at ‘teen’ in teen numbers and ‘ty’ in numbers above 20.
In RE this week we read a story from the bible called ‘The Good Samaritan’. It was a sad story but we learnt that we should always help people if we can, helping people is the right thing to do. Helping others makes them and us feel good inside.
Next week we will be:
- Reading ‘Jack and the beanstalk’.
- Learning the sounds ‘e’ and ‘l’.
- Exploring measuring.
- Exploring growing.

- Continue working on recognising numbers the children can see around them.
