Welcome to Year 2 Santorini Class!
This week in Santorini Class
In our Literacy lessons we have been continuing to learn about Stories with Familiar Settings. We have planned, written, edited and redrafted our own stories set at the beach which feature the characters we have met in the previous weeks.
In Numeracy we have been continuing our learning on fractions and finding ½ and ¼ of different numbers. We also learnt to count in halves on a numberline.
We have also been learning about reflective symmetry. We have been finding the lines of reflective symmetry on different shapes and then creating our own patterns which have reflective symmetry.
In R.E. this week, we celebrated the feast day of The Entry Of the Theotokos (Virgin Mary) Into The Temple which took place on the 21st November.

Weekend Writing Challenge
This week in literacy we have been planning and writing our own story set at the seaside using the stories of ‘The Lighthouse Keeper’s Cat’, ‘The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch’ and ‘The Adventures of Steven the Seagull’ to support us with our writing.
For your writing challenge I would like you to create a story with a familiar setting. You need to include in your writing:-
- A description of the setting e.g. park, house, forest, playground etc.
- Use of senses in your descriptions e.g. what you heard, smelt, saw, touch, tasted etc.
- A beginning, middle and end to your story
- Wow words throughout your story.
- Use of connectives to extend your sentences e.g. but, because, then, while, when etc.
- Full stops and capital letters in the correct places.
I would like you to be as creative as possible and to write at least a page for your story. I look forward to reading them!
Reminders
Book Bags: Please ensure that the children bring their book bag to school every day, as in addition to being a means of transporting reading materials it is a valuable method of communication. We encourage the children to give important notes from their parents direct to their class teacher.
Uniform: Please ensure that all items of clothing are clearly labelled with your child’s name. Children will need their P.E. kits in school on Wednesday as this is our PE day. Please encourage children to be independent dressers at home, as these skills will be helpful at school.
Reading: We change the children’s reading books daily, so if they have finished their books please ensure that the children put their home reading record and reading book in the basket every morning to be changed. Please support your child with reading at home and record a comment in their reading record.
Phonics: The phonics scheme we follow is Read, Write Inc. Please read and practise your sounds and spellings with your child at home.

This week in Crete Class
In our Literacy lessons we have been continuing to learn about Stories with Familiar Settings. For this we have been exploring the eBook of ‘The adventures of Steven Seagull at the seaside’. We have been relating our own experiences of the seaside to the events in the story. We were then able to use these in creating postcards and diary entries as Steven the Seagull.

In Numeracy we have been identifying ¼ and ¾ of different numbers and shapes.

This week in literacy we have been exploring the e-book of ‘The Adventures of Steven the Seagull’. This is the story of Steven the Seagull who goes to visit his cousin Sally at Morecambe and the adventures that they get up to.
For your writing challenge I would like you to think of a time that you have gone to the beach (if you have not been to the beach think of an exciting day out you may have had) and create a recount of this visit. You need to include in your writing:-
- A description of where you went
- A description of the things that you did/saw
- Use of senses in your descriptions e.g. what you heard, smelt, saw, touch, tasted etc.
- Your feelings regarding the trip (try to avoid using nice, happy or sad)
- Full stops and capital letters in the correct places.

This week in Santorini Class
In our Literacy lessons we have been learning about Stories with Familiar Settings. For this we have been exploring the story of ‘The Lighthouse Keeper’s Cat’ by Ronda and David Armitage. We have described the different settings of the story (the lighthouse, the cottage and the village), and explored how characters have changed throughout the story because of different events.
In Numeracy we have been learning how to subtract 2 digit numbers including multiples of 10 using the partitioning column method.

In R.E. this week, we celebrated the feast day of the Archangels Gabriel and Michael which takes place on the 8th November.
We have started our new topic ‘What is our school made of?’ which has a science focus. We have thought about our favourite toys and which materials they are made from. We then worked in groups to classify the different toys based on the materials they are made out of e.g. plastic and not plastic, hard and soft, wood and not wood etc. We then discussed why these toys were made from that material.
