5.3.18

Welcome back after a short break from the snow!

We hope you enjoyed some fun with your children in the snow, although it was extremely cold!

This week in numeracy we will be recapping on how to calculate change. This can be tricky, especially if it is in a word problem, so have a look at this at home if you can. We will also begin to look at time and different lengths of time, for example how many hours in one day, how many days in a month, etc.

In literacy, we will be writing instructions, the children have done so well in this and are really improving their writing skills. They have been using prepositions, adjectives, imperative verbs in their writing and are doing a fantastic job!

Please continue to learn times tables.

Reading books must also be changed regularly, some stories are longer so may need a little more time to read, however, we still need to ensure books are being changed on a regular basis. Please ensure that you write a comment on how your child is reading in their diary.

Have a fantastic week!

Miss Sandberg and Miss Taylor.

26.02.17

This week in literacy we will be learning how to write instructions, we will be relating this to our reading comprehension book, ‘How to train your dragon’, by writing instructions on how to trap a dragon.

Within the topic of instructions, children must be able to use prepositions, imperative verbs and write command sentences.

In numeracy we will be learning how to add and subtract money to give change. The children will  be looking at two step word problems in order to do this e.g.

Hazel buys ten raffle tickets and one other item for £5. She receives £1.35 change. How much was the other item?

As you can see, these questions can be quite difficult to tackle, so please have a go at home.

In topic we are learning about the human body and animals.

Please remember to continue practising times tables and spellings.

Have a fantastic week!

Miss Sandberg and Miss Taylor.

8.5.18

Welcome back, we hope you had a lovely bank holiday weekend.

This week in numeracy we will be learning how to divide two digit numbers by one digit numbers, using formal methods. Children who can master this will move on to three digit numbers. We will also continue looking at solving problems involving fractions.

In literacy we will be continuing to write in a persuasive manner and we will also practise writing sentences dictated by the teacher.

Have a lovely week!

This week in school is investigation week!

We will be doing lots of investigations around our learning, we have some exciting activities planned for the children.

Please continue to learn times tables at home, the children should be confident by now in 2,3,4,5,8 and 10 times tables.

In RE we are learning about rules with a focus on the Ten Commandments.

In literacy and numeracy the children will be carrying out various investigations!

We have also had great fun learning about the different prehistoric ages, the children have made some fantastic Stone Age cave paintings!

Have a wonderful week,

Miss Sandberg and Miss Taylor.

Year 3 week beginning 8th January.

Welcome back to Zakynthos and Spetses class,

Happy New Year!!!!

We hope you have had a fantastic Christmas break and New Year. We would also like to welcome you back into the Spring Term.

In Literacy, we have been learning all about the key features of legends, focusing on the legend of King Arthur and the Sword in the Stone which we will re-tell  next week. In preparation, we have also been exploring how to use a thesaurus effectively.

In Numeracy, we have been revising our work on fractions by adding fractions with the same denominator as well as learning how to estimate calculations with numbers up to 1000 (and check our answers!). This week we will also learn how to tell the time on analogue clocks with Roman Numerals.

In Topic this week, we have started our topic on the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age by exploring what archaeologists do and why they are so important.

Times table challenges are continuing this term so it would be great if you could continue to practice these at home with your child. Your child should know what time table they are focusing on each week. The challenges are every Monday.

Miss Taylor.

Year 3 27.11.17

This week in numeracy we will be learning about compass directions. Within this, we will be learning about 14,1/2 and 3/4 turns. we will also be learning about turning in degrees and angles e.g.- Turn one right angle, 90 degrees from South, which way are you facing now?

We will also be looking at patterns within numbers, finding the pattern and then filling in the missing numbers or continuing the pattern.

In literacy we will be practising our story writing skills, highlighting the importance of inverted commas to show direct speech and paragraphs. Please point out how to use inverted commas when reading with your children at home, especially noticing how new characters speak on a new line and any punctuation.

Homework is due every Wednesday and the times table challenges are still every Monday.

Have a lovely week!

Year 3 week beginning November 20th

Year 3

In our Literacy lessons last week we looked at informal and formal letter writing. This week we are exploring the features of instructional texts, reading and writing our own. Next week, we will explore story writing with a focus on developing a main character within our Story Mountain framework.

In our Numeracy lessons last week we recapped previous learning on fractions and looked at finding the fraction of a shape or number. This week we are exploring how to represent information using pictograms, carroll diagrams and frequency tables. We are also looking at how to answer questions using data from a pictogram and counting in tenths. Next week we will explore fractions as decimals.

In Topic we have started investigating forces and magnets. So far we have investigated what forces are and what pulling or pushing forces we can see in the world around us. We have also investigated the effect of friction on the movement of objects and what materials create the most friction. In the following weeks we will explore magnets, magnetic forces (attract/repel) and magnetic materials.

In R.E. we have explored icons, why God wants our parents to love us and how marriage is a sacrament of love. We will continue to explore these themes in the following week.

Children should continue to practise their timetables at home for their timetable challenges in class. Children should know which timetable they will have their challenge on. They will be given in a random order so please do not just focus on the answers! Timetables are an invaluable means of developing children’s confidence in multiplication and division.

Rather than taking spellings home to practise, this half term children have been practising spellings as a class in short 15 minute sessions. These sessions are designed to develop children’s spellings competences.

Thank you for your continued support and we look forward to another fun filled week.

Miss Taylor & Miss Sandberg.

14.11.17

This week in literacy we will be learning about features of formal and informal letters and we will be writing our own.

Please check Spellodrome for spellings you can practise at home.

In numeracy we will be learning how to find fractions of amounts and quantities and we will also be learning how to read and find information from pictograms.

Please use Mathletics as an available tool for you to practise at home.

Remember, every Monday we have a times table challenge, the children should by now be confident in the 2,3,4,5, 8 and 10 times table. This is extremely important as it applies to a wide range of their learning and next year in year 4 they will be expected to know a new set confidently.

Have a great week!

Year 3 6.11.17

This week in literacy we will be comparing stories by Roald Dahl.

We will no longer be setting spelling challenges, as we have a new system of learning spellings in the classroom, so please practise spellings on spellodrome.

In numeracy we will be learning multiplication and division facts for the 3, 4 and 8 times tables, this is essential to this years learning so please practise at home.

Remember, in year 3 the children MUST learn the 2,3,4,5,8 and 10 times tables off by heart in any order. If this is not practised regularly at home the children will forget them, please continue to learn these with your children.

Have a lovely week!
