Welcome to Year 4

Year 4 week beginning 28th November 2016

Welcome back to year 4.

In numeracy this week we are rounding whole numbers to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000.  Some of us have also begun to round decimals to the nearest whole number and of course there are still one or two fiendish word problems still floating around!  At the end of the week we are going to be measuring capacity of liquids so if you can lend us PLASTIC measuring jugs on Thursday and Friday that would be helpful.

In literacy we are organising the information that we have gathered about the Romans into sub headings and paragraphs ready to use when we write our report at the end of the week.

In R.E. this week we are learning about St Andrew.  We will learn about how he became a disciple of Jesus and how he spread the teachings of Jesus after Jesus’s ascension.  We will celebrate his life and reflect on his death.  He was martyred on an x-shaped cross as he did not see himself worthy enough to die on the same shaped cross as Jesus.

In P.E. we are continuing to develop our basketball skills through exercises and matches.

This week’s spellings are inform, admire, sense, adore, prepare, preparation, information, admiration, sensation and adoration.

Year 4 blog 21November 2016

Welcome back to the year 4 blog!  The countdown to Christmas goes on!

In numeracy this week we are preparing ourselves for those teenage shopping sprees or maybe just the middle aged weekly shop in Tesco.  Yes, we’re adding and subtracting decimal numbers including money.  We’re also working out real life word problems involving money using our adding, subtracting, and in some cases, multiplying skills.  We’re also going to sort data using a Venn Diagram.

We will have a largely grammar focus in Literacy this week.  We’ll be writing in the first person narrative, using and identifying the past tense and practicing our use of adverbs, conjunctions and prepositions to show the passing of time.  We will also be researching and collecting evidence in preparation for writing a report about the Romans next week.

In R.E. we will be celebrating the special day of the 21st of November when the Virgin Mary entered the Temple.  At the age of only three Mary’s parents gave her to the Temple to be educated in the ways of God.  We will be reflecting and empathising with Mary and her parents and considering why they made such a decision.

This week’s spelling are expression, discussion, confession, permission, admission, possession, fruit, breath, complete, continue.

Also, please make sure you listen to your child read for at least twenty minutes a day.

Ithaca, Samos, Symi

This week we have been writing our stories that raise an issue or dilemma. The children have produced some fantastic stories and shown off their story writing skills. Next week as some of the children are in Hooke Court, we will be reviewing different grammar rules through fun activities.

In Numeracy we have been learning how to use the inverse to check our calculations. We have also been practising how to read the time on analogue and digital clocks. Next week we will be looking at multiples of 6, 7, 8 and 9.

In RE we celebrated St Nectarios and observed Remembrance Day. The children made a wreath for the class, as well as their own poppies.

We would like to wish everybody going to Hooke Court a safe and happy journey and look forward to their stories of their adventures when they return. Keep warm!

Year 4 blog week beginning 31 October 2016

Welcome back after half term!  The run in to Christmas has begun!

In Literacy this week we are looking at stories and the structure of them focusing in particular on the dilemmas characters often face and how these are often resolved.  We will write our own story next week.

In numeracy we have been looking at number bonds to 10, 100 and 1000.  What patterns can we see in number bonds to ten that can help us bond numbers to 100?  For example, if 2+8 = 10 then 20+80 100.  We can also use the same methodology to bond numbers to 1000.  We are also telling the time using analogue, digital and twenty four hour clocks.  Those that master time telling on all types of clock will be using this knowledge to solve time word problems and read timetables.

In R.E. this week we have been learning about Hindu Diwali.  We learnt about the story of Rama and Sita and the triumph of good over evil and light over darkness.  We found interesting comparisons with Christian stories where light also overcomes darkness.

We will also be starting our new topic study: The Romans.  A chronological progression from our study of Ancient Greece and also a good reference point to our study of the early Church in R.E.  The children know that the early Christians lived a daily struggle of trying to keep their worship secrete from the Romans.  We also know about Christian martyrs who have refused to renounce their beliefs.

This week’s spellings are expansion, extension, tension, confusion, transfusion, supervision, comprehension, busy, experience and remember.

Year 4 week beginning 3rd October 2016

This week we will be continuing our learning on the Ancient Greeks and once again, linking it to our Literacy learning. In RE, we celebrated St. Cyprian’s Day and spoke about the importance in following in the light of God.

In Literacy, we wrote a wrote a newspaper report on a topic of their choice. We continued to focus on sentence writing, and how we can extend out sentences with adverbs, adjectives and conjunctions. The reports very great! Very detailed and the children did great layouts and used incredible adjectives. This week we are finishing newspaper reports and going onto interviews,

In Numeracy we focused on using the column method to subtract 4digit numbers. We also looked at adding and subtracting money using the column method. All children were able to do this by the end of the week, which was great!

This week we will be continuing our learning on the Ancient Greeks and linked it to our Literacy learning. In RE, we revisited the Elevation of the Holy Cross, and the children shared their understanding of the importance of the day.

In Literacy, we wrote a report on the opening ceremony of the Olympics. We had a big focus on sentence writing, and how we can extend out sentences with subordinate clauses and conjunctions. The reports we very interesting, and the children had some amazing adjectives to use to describe what they saw. This week we are writing a newspaper report, researching our topic using the internet and books.

In Numeracy we focused on using the column method to add 4digit numbers. Some children even went as far as solving word problems, using the column method to work out the calculations. This week we are looking at using the column method for addition and subtraction to solve calculations involving money.

Year 4

Welcome to Year 4

Week ending 17th November 2023

Hello fantastic Year 4

This weekend Symi pupils will have to focus on practising their assembly lines, as next Friday it is our performance at school.

There is an English writing task and Maths exercises in your home learning book.

Try to work over the weekend as much as you can but we will carry  on with our practice from Monday onwards.

When you start working on your English task think of the Tempo Plan you used in class to inform your plot and to expand your story .

We are looking for interesting events that will engage your reader. Try to use some of the words we have learned in Latin and include some useful historical information if you wish to.

Spelling and times tables test will be next Friday.

Enjoy your weekend !

Mrs Tsiama and Miss Molyneux

Week ending 10th November 2023

Hello everyone.

Well done for your fantastic work this week.

For your English this term we would like you to focus on ways  that help us making our sentences more interesting to the reader.

Your home learning is about the use of Subordinate clauses.

Why are subordinate clauses important?

Some of the reasons are:

  • They add more useful and interesting information to a sentence
  • They turn a simple sentence into a complex sentence.
  • They establish the time sequence, causality, or a specific example of the idea.
  • Add variety to sentence structure, making writing more interesting, engaging, and sophisticated overall.

Next week we will practise further our skills of identifying this type of sentences in the book we are reading in order to inform our writing tasks.

In Maths we strongly suggest you to practise your timetables especially 6,7,8 and 9. We currently work with Adding and Subtracting 4 digit numbers but we will soon be moving to multiplication and division so knowing our timetables is essential.

Please revise your spellings from last week and practise the statutory spellings given  with the current home learning. We will be having a spelling test next Friday.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Mrs Tsiama and Miss Molineux

Home Learning for October Half Term

Dear Symi and Ithaca pupils

We hope you are all well and that you are enjoying this half term.

We have set assignments for spelling and Maths on Ed Shed. You will have to use your log in details that you will find in your Yellow Reading Record books. It is important to allocate a time on a daily basis to do this exercises as it is a good way to revise and practise further what we have done in the classroom.

We are looking forward to receiving your Roman Standards and Shields when you come back to the school. This is our first project about our new exciting Topic  which is Roman Britain!

Keep on practising your rounding skills in Maths with the worksheets we gave you for home work.

Check your Greek Blog for updates regarding with  your Greek Language home learning tasks.

We wish you  a restful and creative half term.

Mrs Tsiama and Miss Molyneux

Week ending 6th October 2023

Hi Symi and Ithaca

During this week we discussed about our vocabulary enrichment.

It is very important that you read books at home, both fiction and non- fiction stories on a daily basis.

Remember to bring your Reading Record with comments from your parents so that we will know what do you think about the stories you read and how difficult or easy are these stories for you.

It is very  beneficial to discuss with your parents about the stories you read and to let your parents ask you questions about these stories. You can give ideas to them by giving them examples of what we do in the classroom during our daily reading lessons.

This weekend please focus on vocabulary. Find new words in the book that you have taken home to read and write them down on your notebook or a piece of paper.

Then on Monday we will discuss together  about the meanings  of these words and think about how we can use  them in our writing .

From this week we will start learning words with certain prefixes:

Block A: Words  beginning with un-

unfriendly, unclear, unemployed, uncertain, unable, unaccepted, unaided, unadmired, unabsorbed.

Please practise these words for your spelling test next week.

You will be given your log in details for ED shed learning platform next week .

Have a lovely weekend.

Mrs Tsiama and Miss Molyneux
