Welcome to Year 2

Year 2 Week Ending 12.1.18

Welcome to Year 2!

We hope you have had a restful and enjoyable Christmas Holidays!

This week in Year 2

In our Literacy lessons we have been learning about Non Fiction Texts. For this we have been exploring the features of non-fiction texts and using these to create notes on dinosaurs. We have then used these features of non-fiction texts and our notes to plan our own information page on a chosen dinosaur.

In Numeracy we have been focusing on partitioning 2 digit numbers into tens and ones and the different ways in which we can do this.

We have also been learning about length. We have learnt how to measure the length of different objects accurately using a ruler making sure we start measuring from the 0. We have also compared the lengths of different objects using = (equals), < (less than) and > (more than).

In R.E. this week, we have learnt about the good news of Jesus in the Annunciation of the Theotokos. We learnt that Theotokos means mother of God.

We have started our new topic ‘Why would a dinosaur not make a good pet?’ which has a science focus. We were amazed to discover a dinosaur egg in our classroom and have been finding out a bit more about it. We have discussed the terms, living, once-lived and non-living. We then sorted items into these categories and decided that dinosaurs fit into the once lived category.

Next Week in Year 2

The children can draw a picture and label different parts of the school building as well as the materials each part of the school would be made of OR the children can design a new school building using a variety of junk/ craft materials such as cardboard boxes, card, pipe cleaners, lollipop sticks etc.

Your home learning project is due on Friday 8th December 2017.

If you have any problems or need some help, then please come and see us as soon as possible, do not leave it until the hand in date.

Year 2 Week Ending 13.10.17

Welcome to Year 2!

This week in Year 2

In our Literacy lessons we have been exploring silly poems. We begun the week by reading and performing the Dr Seuss book “Fox In Sock” and discussed what made it a tongue twister. We have also written our own tongue twisters using words beginning with the same sound. Towards the end of the week we explored the poems “In The Giant’s Rucksack’ and ‘Mister Magnolia’ before creating our own in a similar style.

In Numeracy we have been looking at addition and subtraction rules. We have understood that addition can be done in any order and that the answer will always be larger than the numbers we are adding. We have also understood that when subtracting that the larger number goes first and the answer is always smaller than the first number. We also began to explore the relationships between addition and subtraction.

At the end of the week we started to look at money and adding different coins together.

In R.E. this week, we have explored why we should help others and the story of Jesus healing the man who could not walk.

During our topic ‘What was London like in 1666?’ we created newspaper reports on the fire including eyewitness statements using our senses.

Next week in Crete Class we will be celebrating Inclusion Week

Weekend Writing Task

For your writing challenge this week I would like you to invent your own animal and describe its characteristics. You would need to include in your description:

  • What your animal looks like and its name
  • Where it lives
  • What it eats
  • What it does and how it behaves.
  • Full stops and capital letters in the correct places.

I would like you to be very creative with your animal and write at least a page. I look forward to reading them!

Please return your books to school every Wednesday.
